South celebrates April 25 with anthems to freedom, exhibitions and video-mapping

See what celebrations each county will offer

Concerts, exhibitions and even a show by video-mapping they will help the Algarve and Baixo Alentejo to celebrate the 25th of April, the «entire and clean initial day» in which «we emerged from the night and the silence», as Sophia de Mello Breyner once wrote.

Starting with Faro, the commemorations of the 25th of April have, as one of the highlights, the concert “Trovadores de Abril”, on the night of the 24th. spectacle in tribute to freedom.

But there is a lot more going on in the Algarve capital. On the 23rd, Margarida Tengarrinha, an anti-fascist resistant, will tell her story to the students of Escola Secundária João de Deus. On the 28th, there will be “Floral Games”, starting at 15:30 pm, at the Ginásio Clube de Faro.

As for the 25th of April, the commemorations will begin at 9:00 am with a solemn session at the Paços do Concelho. In the afternoon, time for concerts with Mauro Amaral (14:00 pm, in Santa Bárbara de Nexe), Afonso Dias and Tânia Silva (15:00 pm at the Montenegro Socio-Cultural Solidarity Association) and Zé Maria e Gonçalo (21:30 pm, at Casa do People of Estoi).

On the 29th, the Chamber of Faro hosts a Municipal Youth Assembly, at 14:30 pm, under the theme “Sustainable Development – ​​And now what to do?”.

Still in Faro, at the Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR) of the Algarve, there is an exhibition with around 40 posters alluding to the Carnation Revolution.

Promoted by Associação 25 de Abril, the exhibition contains, for example, posters by João Abel Manta and Vespeira.

The emblematic poster of the boy putting a spike in his shotgun is part of the exhibition, along with others from the MFA (Armed Forces Movement), as well as press clippings at the time.

In parallel, an exhibition of the work of sculptor Hermínio Pinto da Silva is available, presented as a contemporary approach to “the human being”.

The two exhibitions will be open to the public until April 30, at the following time: Monday to Friday, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and from 14:00 pm to 17:30 pm.

Passing to Olhão, the 45th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution will be celebrated throughout the county.

"Look at the sea" is the book by Carlos da Cena, which, as part of the 25th of April commemorations in Olhão, has its launching ceremony on Tuesday, the 23rd, at 18 pm, aboard the Bom Sucesso caique, in an initiative of the Parish Council of Olhão.

The official Freedom Day ceremonies are in Paços do Concelho, where, from 9:00 am on Thursday, April 25, the flag-raising ceremony takes place, with the participation of the Municipal Fire Department of Olhão, the respective Fanfare , and the Banda Filarmónica 1º de Dezembro de Moncarapacho.

At 15:00 pm, in the Pavilhão de Eventos, in Moncarapacho, the Festa do 25 de Abril takes place, organized by the Union of Parishes of Moncarapacho and Fuzeta.

Until the end of the month, the official program to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the 25th of April continues, with an emphasis on the show by Fernando Tordo, which takes place on the stage of the Municipal Auditorium on Saturday, April 27th, at 21:30 pm.

In Fuzeta, on the 25th of April, a get-together will take place at the Maria José Fraqueza Library. The moment will feature the participation of José Cardoso Fontão, Captain de Abril, André Badalo (director of “Portugal is not for sale”), and Cristiana Guerreiro and Ana Bota (Youth Parliament).

A show of poetry and music, with João Pereira and Ricardo Martins, will take place on the 24th, starting at 21 pm, at the headquarters of Grupo Etnográfica de Quelfes. Admission is free.

Em Portimão, one of the highlights is the concert by Paulo de Carvalho, on the night of April 24, starting at 22 pm, at Alameda da República.

The show promises to be memorable and “timeless”, with a musical lineup that travels through various eras and successes in the career of the Portuguese musician and composer, with the interpretation of songs that were and are true successes. On the façade of the Igreja do Colégio dos Jesuítas there will also be a show of projection of static images and video, alluding to the 25th of April 1974.

On the day of the Carnation Revolution, official celebrations begin at 9:00 am with the raising of flags and the interpretation of the national anthem by the Banda Filarmónica Portimonense, at Rotunda Salgueiro Maia, thus marking the rehabilitation of the fountain and the allusive statue to the ephemeris that decorate this rotunda, which for decades had to be restored. The moment will also be marked by a street run by the Fanfarra dos Bombeiros de Portimão and a release of pigeons.

At 10:00 am, the XV Freedom Race begins, which traditionally brings together hundreds of participants. The start will be in the Portimão riverside area, next to the bandstand.

At 10:30 am, the usual Solemn Session will take place in the Main Hall of Paços do Concelho, with interventions by the representatives of the political parties with a seat in the Municipal Assembly of Portimão and the respective president, as well as the mayor of Portimão.

The interventions will be interspersed with musical moments carried out by the Youth Group of Grupo Coral Adágio and the Academy of Music of Portimão.

Also noteworthy is the strong associative component, as a driving force in supporting cultural, sporting, educational, youth and social responses, which this year will sign with the local authority, on the afternoon of 25 April, more than 750 thousand euros in program contracts, about 20% more investment than in the previous year.

This moment starts at 16 pm, at the Salão Nobre of the Paços do Concelho, and will feature musical performances by Vasco Ramalho.

Talking about art and sport, before and after April, was the starting point for two conferences that take place, on different days, at the Café Concerto do Tempo.

On the 22nd, the conference “Art before and after the 25th of April of 74” will take place, with the plastic artists Margarida Tengarrinha, Franco Charais (former Captain of April) and Stella Barreto, while for the 30th of April the theme “ The History of Sport before and after the 25th of April 74”, by professors Alcino Pedrosa and Joaquim Paulino. Both initiatives start at 18:30 pm.

Another highlight is the exhibition “25 de Abril – Drawings by João Abel Manta”, from the Lisbon Museum Collection and donated by the Lisbon City Council/EGEAC, which will be inaugurated on the 26th of April, at 16 pm, at the Museu de Portimão, where reproductions from the original graphic work of this cartoonist will be exhibited.

The creation of the image alluding to the 25 April Celebrations this year was developed within the scope of the “Abrir Abril” competition, promoted by School Libraries in partnership with the Manuel Teixeira Gomes Municipal Library, open to the participation of secondary school students. The authorship is Letícia Marques, 12th grader at Escola Secundária Poeta António Aleixo.

Em Albufeira, the program of events runs from the 24th to the 26th. It all starts with another “Walk to the Moon”, with an appointment at 20 pm at the Paços do Concelho.

At 21 pm, the Moçoilas (Inês Rosa, Margarida Guerreiro and Teresa Silva) promise to flood the Municipal Auditorium of Albufeira with a good mood and the richness of singing from the Algarve interior.

«There are three women who give soul to the songs of the mountains – and of the corners of the earth, and of many other themes inspired by these places, in their tones, in their peculiar sounds and smells. The trio takes many of the old themes and enriches them with its own energy, modifying some, appropriating others and paving the way for new melodies and new songs», says the Câmara de Albufeira.

As happens every year, on the morning of the 25th of April, from 9:30 am, the usual Hastear das Bandeiras is held in the three parishes of the municipality.

The ceremony is accompanied by the sound of the National Anthem by the Band of the Sociedade Musical e Recreio Popular de Paderne, with Guard of Honor from the Firemen Volunteers of Albufeira. To mark the symbolism of the time, there will be a distribution of carnations and a release of pigeons, in front of the City Hall building.

In the parish of Ferreiras, from 8:30 am to 13:30 pm, the IV Duathlon 25 de Abril will take place, an initiative that integrates the Regional Championship of the modality.

«And because it is important that everyone is aware of the importance of the date, from 12:30 pm, gather family and friends, prepare a picnic and come to Jardim de Vale Faro, participate in a musical afternoon of Tribute to Zeca Afonso and other musicians of the Revolution, with Luís Galrito ​​and Artur Correia», invites the municipality.

The program, which is organized by the Parish Council of Albufeira and Olhos de Água with the support of the City Council, also includes a recital of poems alluding to the Revolution, face painting, inflatables, trampolines, traditional games, kids boot camp, kids manicure and balloon modeling.

The “JuvAlbuhera” association will be present by boosting the first cultural market “Livre Dade”. The idea is to promote cultural sharing through exchanges or symbolic sales of Books, CDs, DVDs, Vinyls, Games, and other cultural items. To end the day, from 17 pm onwards, there is a Dancing Afternoon at the premises of the Socio-Cultural and Recreational Association “The Friends of the Third Age of Albufeira” (ASCRATIA), in Ferreiras.

The program closes on the 26th of April, at 14:30 pm, in the Reading Room of the Albufeira Historical Archive, with the Tertúlia “What Dictatorship was this that the Revolution of the 25th of April overthrew?” with Margarida Tengarrinha.

Born in Portimão, the city where she was born in 1928, Margarida Tengarrinha began her political activity in 1948, as part of the MUD Juvenil, at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts (ESBAL). In 1955, he joined the PCP's clandestine militancy with his companion José Dias Coelho, who was shot dead by the PIDE on December 19, 1961.

From that year, until 1968, she worked with Álvaro Cunhal and later as editor of Rádio Portugal Livre. For several years she was a copywriter, paginator and illustrator for the newspaper Avante.

After the 25th of April, she was a member of the Central Committee of the PCP and deputy of the PCP for the Algarve. In 2016, he was awarded the Maria Veleda Prize from the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve.

Passing to Vila Real de Santo António, the program includes a musical show, a solemn session, tributes and cultural activities.

The celebrations begin on the 24th, with the musical and poetic show “Filhos da Madrugada”, at Centro Cultural António Aleixo, at 21 pm.

On the 25th, the celebrations begin with the usual raising of the flag and distribution of carnations in the three parishes of the municipality.

At 10:30 am, at the Vicente Campinas Municipal Library, the Solemn Session of the Municipal Assembly of VRSA, commemorating Freedom Day.

After the session, a tribute ceremony will be held to the local poet Manuel Gomes, with the attribution of his name to the auditorium of the Municipal Library.

Manuel Joaquim Martins Gomes, who, over the last few years, adopted the literary name Manuel do Rio, was born on 3 July 1937, in Vila Real de Santo António, where he has always resided. Through his peculiar way of translating thoughts into verse, he contributed to the dissemination of the municipality's culture, having published several works and collections and won several awards.

Also included in the commemorations of the Carnation Revolution, the delivery, to the Vicente Campinas Library, of the colonial bibliographic collection of the Espinheira Lourido/Fontes Alferes Archive-Library is planned. The ceremony will take place on the 26th, at 17:00.

The celebrations of the 45th anniversary of the 25th of April are jointly organized by the Municipality of VRSA and the Parish Councils of VRSA, Monte Gordo and Vila Nova de Cacela. All activities have free entry.

Monchique an exhibition about José Afonso, promoted by the Cultural Dynamization Group “O Monchiqueiro” is already on display at Galeria de Santo António.

Provided by Associação José Afonso, the exhibition, which has 30 panels on the life and work of the singer and composer of traditional and intervention music, aims to make known the name of the artist and his importance in the cultural context of the Carnation Revolution and bring the local and school community closer to these celebrations, by highlighting one of the characters that marked the culture of the time.

The exhibition has the support of the Municipality of Monchique and the José Afonso Association and is open from Monday to Thursday, from 11:00 am to 13:00 pm and on Friday, from 11:00 am to 13:00 pm and from 14:30 pm to 16:30 pm.

Monchique will also attend a concert with the “Al-Ghardband”, on the 24th, at 21 pm, at Largo dos Chorões.

The morning of the 25th begins with the Liberdade Cycle Tour, an initiative that will tour all the parishes of the county.

The day will also be filled with a running march, traditional games, target shooting, karate demonstrations, football games and various animations, organized and promoted by local clubs and associations and aimed at the entire population.

The local authority will provide all participants in the various activities with a convivial lunch, starting at 12:30 pm in front of the Internet Space.

As for São Brás de Alportel, will use the 25th of April to inaugurate a work of art, allusive to freedom, by Carlos Correia, in the new roundabout built on Avenida da Liberdade. It will be at 10:30 am. In the evening, at 21 pm, the show “Vozes de Abril” is on stage at the Cine-Teatro de São Brás.

Lastly, Almodôvar, in Baixo Alentejo, will start marking the Carnation Revolution on the 24th, at 10:00 am, with a Youth Assembly, at the Salão Nobre dos Paços do Concelho.

At 17:30 pm, the exhibition “Coletiva D'Arte Alentejo” opens at the Almodôvar Cultural Forum. At 22:30 pm, at Praça da República, the Theater Company “Viv'Arte” presents the play “There is no ax that cuts the roots of thought”.

At midnight there is a fireworks show, next to the new Mineiro Statue, in the renovated South Entrance of Almodôvar, which marks the entry into the dawn of the Carnation Revolution.

On the 25th of April, the morning starts with Traditional Games, from 9:00 am, at Parque de Merendas. From 10:00 am at the Municipal Picadeiro, the III Municipality of Almodôvar Award – Obstacle Jumps takes place.

Also at 10:00 am there is a parade by the Almodôvar Volunteer Fire Department and the Majoretes and Fanfarra de Almodôvar, from “Almovimento”. This will be followed, at 10:30 am, by the Raising the Flag ceremony at the Paços do Concelho and the Solemn Session commemorating the 45th anniversary of April, at the Cineteatro Municipal de Almodôvar, starting at 11:00 am.

At lunch time (13 pm), the local authority offers the population the now traditional fraternization lunch, commemorating the 00th of April, at Parque de Merendas de Almodôvar, which will be animated to the sound of music by Nelson Ferro.
