Liberdade is at the Portimão Museum with João Abel Manta

The exhibition will be open until the 12th of May

The exhibition “25 de Abril – Drawings by João Abel Manta”, from the Lisbon Museum Collection, granted by the Lisbon City Council –EGEAC, opens on the 26th, at 18 pm, at the Portimão Museum, as part of the 00th anniversary celebrations of the Carnation Revolution.

45 years ago, thanks to the initiative of the MFA – Movement of the Armed Forces, known as the Carnation Revolution, the 25th of April 1974 was historically marked in Portugal, by the end of candidacy, censorship, political arrests and the colonial war , restoring democracy, freedom and the hope of greater economic and social justice to the Portuguese.

The cartoonist João Abel Manta, through his posters and drawings, revealed, «in a graphic and creative way, his biting and critical vision of that period and its political and cultural context, with his intervention also being a celebration of freedom of expression , meanwhile conquered», stresses the Portimão Museum.

The exhibition features reproductions from originals of part of the graphic work of painter João Abel Manta alluding to this period and which are part of the Lisbon Museum collection.

Some distinct stages of this period were shown – from the pre 25th of April 1974 to the present day, in João Abel Manta's humorous and critical vision.

The exhibition will be open until the 12th of May.

João Abel Manta was born in 1928, in Lisbon. Graduated in Architecture from the Lisbon School of Fine Arts in 1951, he dedicated a large part of his career to the visual artist aspect, developing several works in the areas of painting, ceramics, tapestry, mosaic, illustration, graphic arts and cartoons.
