Navy declassifies Colonial War documents that can now be consulted by the public

Document Declassification Commission has already analyzed 1.300 linear meters of documentation

More than a kilometer of classified documents have already been declassified by the Document Declassification Commission, created by the Navy in 2017, now allowing them to be consulted by the public at the Navy's Central Library.

The Portuguese Navy has in its Historical Archive «a significant documental collection that reflects an important part of the history of Portugal».

"Researchers, journalists and students have often expressed the desire to consult that documentation," adds the Navy.

However, «the main obstacle to consulting some documentation is linked to the fact that it is classified».

In an attempt to rescue the memory of the near past and create conditions for the memory to be transformed into History, also contributing to transparency and rigor, the Portuguese Navy created the Commission for Declassification of Documents (CDD).

The CDD started its work in February 2017 and, since then until the present date, around 1.300 linear meters of documentation have been analyzed, which allowed the declassification of a large number of documents.

This now declassified documentation is mostly from the Colonial War period. It is currently available to the public at the Marine Central Library – Historical Archive, located in the Cordoaria Nacional building.
