Censorship in the Arts in the Estado Novo motivates exhibition in Albufeira

Opening will feature a conference by researcher Maria João Raminhos Duarte

“What was left unsaid – Censorship in Culture and the Arts-1936-1974″ is the title of the exhibition that the Albufeira Historical Archive, in collaboration with the Portuguese Society of Authors, will open on the 25th, at Espaço de Cultural Extension of the Historical Archive.

The exhibition, which includes texts, photos and documents, has sections dedicated to all areas of culture that have suffered from the interference of Censorship for decades.

This exhibition aims to show how Censorship affected not only culture, but the life of the Portuguese in general, addressing a critical period in Portuguese history (1936-1974), when «the Estado Novo, in the name of interests of the dictatorship, imposed on the Portuguese a system characterized by the deprivation of freedom of expression».

At the inauguration of this exhibition, a presentation will take place with the guest of one of the greatest researchers in the area, Maria João Raminhos Duarte, researcher at the Institute of Contemporary History of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, whose work has been aimed at the dictatorship and oppression suffered by the Algarve during the Second Republic.

This exhibition, which runs until May 3, can be visited from Monday to Friday, from 9:00 am to 14:00 pm. Guided visits by appointment will be from Monday to Friday, from 9:30 am to 16:30 pm. For this purpose, interested parties should contact by telephone 289 599 630 or by e-mail [email protected].
