Almodôvar inaugurates a monument in honor of its miners

Place of the monument will be renamed “Rotunda do Mineiro”

A monument in honor of the miners of Almodôvar will be inaugurated next Wednesday, December 4th, at 15:30 pm, at the roundabout of the recently reclassified southern entrance to this Alentejo town.

With this statue, the Municipality of Almodôvar pays "homage to Almodovar miners, for the importance that this activity has in our municipality and for the symbolism of this profession and its strong link to the economic development of the region and the country."

Because of the monument, the place will be renamed “Rotunda do Mineiro”.

In the symbolism of this statue, the municipality intends to «reflect the economic and social importance of mining activities in the municipality of Almodôvar, as well as in all the surrounding municipalities».

António Bota, Mayor, stresses that «Almodôvar pays tribute to all miners who work daily so that this activity is one of the most significant and most important in our region, giving true importance to all those who work in the region. interior of the earth to bring to the surface better living conditions for their families».

This monument is designed by the sculptor Aureliano Marques de Aguiar, the same author of the works that honored other professions, such as the “Estátua do Sapateiro” or the “Firemen's Car”, both installed in the county seat.

The inauguration of the monument will be attended by the Bishop of Beja, the administrator of Somincor, a group that operates the Neves-Corvo Mine, as well as numerous mayors.
