Maria Veleda Award was not awarded this year

In 2019, the award will have a new edition

There were even five applications, but this year's “Maria Veleda” Regional Award was not awarded by decision of the jury.

According to the Regional Directorate of Culture, «from the set of registered candidacies, it was verified that one was submitted after the deadline».

In assessing the others, "the jury recognized that at least two of the candidates had a prominent action in the cultural and civic dimension, however, they did not meet the criteria established in number 1 of the regulation and did not have a "long cultural and civic path ”».

The Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve expresses, «along with all the candidates, the hope that they continue with the projects and actions that each one has implemented and that have greatly contributed to the socio-cultural development of the Algarve».

With the creation of this award, in 2014, the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve intends to recognize the cultural and civic path of leading figures in particularly relevant and innovative interventions in the region, as well as contributing to the promotion of equality between women and men in public policy.

The jury is made up of Alexandra Gonçalves, regional director of Culture of the Algarve, Gonçalo Pescada, music teacher, João Guerreiro, university professor, José Gameiro, scientific director of the Portimão Museum, Manuel Brito, editor, Margarida Tengarrinha, plastic artist and teacher , Maria Augusta Casaca, journalist, Natividade Monteiro, professor and researcher, and Pedro Ferré, university professor.

In 2019, the Maria Veleda Regional Award will have a new edition. The winners of this award were Daisy Tengarrinha, in 2014, José Louro, in 2016, and Mendes Bota, in 2017. In 2015, the jury also decided not to award the distinction.
