«A Sea of Films!» ends with homage to Monchique in the Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar

A few mosquitoes of arbutus to warm the soul accompany the exhibition of the documentary on the production of this brandy in the mountains of Monchique

The documentary film exhibition «Um Mar de Filmes!» ends next Saturday night, the 29th, at 21 pm, at the Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar (Portimão), with the screening of the documentary «Medronho everyday (Unedo Omnes Dies), which will be accompanied by the performance of the Cavaquinhos de Monchique and a competition of said brandy.

All of this, explains Luísa Baptista, responsible for the production of this exhibition, is also intended to be a tribute to Monchique, a county and mountains that, at the beginning of August, were hit by a devastating fire.

So, on September 29, Rizoma Lab – Associação Cultural closes with a golden key the documentary film exhibition «Um Mar de Filmes!» and joins the commemorations of the European Heritage Days (JEP), this year with the theme “Sharing Memories”.

«We could not fail to pay homage, in this exhibition dedicated to the intangible heritage, to what the ancients called the “sacred mountain”, observed from a distance from Alcalar. In a difficult year of devastation, it becomes even more emblematic to present this documentary, filmed in the then verdant Serra de Monchique – on this night, sounds, images, smells and flavors will be present at the European Heritage Days in Alcalar», explains Luísa Baptista .

There will be three moments of celebration of Monchique, starting at 20:30, with the performance of the group of Cavaquinhos de Monchique, followed, half an hour later, between 2 and 22:00 pm, by the screening of the film «Medronho Todos Dias (Unedo Omnes) Dies)», performed by Sílvia Coelho and Paulo Raposo.

This film follows the unique knowledge of the production process of the medronho brandy and its presence throughout the Monchique region, through the voice (and body) of the distillers who continue this artisanal art.

His isolation in the mountains and his patient labor reveal a particular notion of time and effort inseparable from the ancestral roots of this empirical knowledge.

Filming took place for a year, in the regions of Monchique and Marmelete, in order to capture the different stages of production of the medronho brandy: from harvesting the fruit (between September and November) to its distillation (between January and March), culminating in the collective celebration, present at the end of the film through the slaughter of the pig and the spontaneity of the Grupo Coral da Confraria do Medronho.

“Without pretensions to illustrating the inherent specificity of manufacturing, this documentary focuses on the individual experience and worldview of each distiller, and it is through this that we seek to find a deep connection to a shared collective and community heritage”, explain the authors.

With the direction, sound and image by Sílvia Coelho and Paulo Raposo, the documentary has the participation of Joaquim Valério, Joaquim Arracha, Joaquim Teixeira, José Viana, Leonilde Viana, José da Silva, José Rosendo, Grupo Coral da Confraria do Medronho “Os Monchiqueiros”.

Finally, there will be a conversation and tasting of arbutus with APAGARBE – Association of Arbutus Producers of the Barlavento Algarvio.

As all this will be outdoors, in addition to "mosquitos" (cups) of arbutus to warm the soul, there will be blankets available to the public. Admission is free.

The cycle «A Sea of Films!» is part of DiVaM 2018 – Promotion and Enhancement of Monuments – cultural program organized by the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve and the European Heritage Days 2018 and has the support of the Museum of Portimão/Portimão Town Hall, Parish Council of Monchique, Cavaquinhos de Monchique and APAGARBE – Association of Arbutus Producers of the Barlavento Algarvio.
