Monchique fire causes 24 injuries

Fire doesn't let up and has lasted since Friday

24 people were injured this Sunday night, August 5, due to the fire that continues to rage in Monchique, Antenna 1 advances.

One of them is an elderly woman, aged 72, who is in serious condition and had to be evacuated by helicopter to Hospital de São José, in Lisbon.

There were also 40 people assisted, of which 12 are civilians and 28 are civil protection agents.

The fire has already forced the evacuation of the Macdonald Monchique Resort & Spa. It all happened around 00:00, when the hotel was 70% occupied.

Tonight, with fire surrounding the village, no one paid an eye to Monchique and many of the inhabitants followed the situation from the viewpoint of S. Sebastião.

To what Sul Informação he found out from local residents, at the moment there are no flames around the town, just a lot of smoke. But there is still an active front behind the convent, and around the village, this is the only area that needs to burn.

Further south, the fire continued to rage throughout the night, having entered both Silves and Portimão. There are news of flames near Parque da Mina and in Rasmalho.

The fire now seems to be heading towards Caldas de Monchique and Vale de Boi, on one front, while the other is progressing towards São Marcos da Serra, in the municipality of Silves.

According to the Civil Protection website, at the moment the fire is being fought by 1094 operational personnel, supported by 330 vehicles and five air vehicles that have already started to return to action. However, the very intense smoke is hampering the action of helicopters and planes.
