João Guerreiro, full professor and former rector of the University of Algarve (UAlg), was distinguished, this Tuesday, 3 July, with the “Medal of Scientific Merit, Science 2018”, presented by Prime Minister António Costa.

The ceremony took place at the annual meeting of researchers “Science 2018”, at the Centro de Congressos de Lisboa.

The "Medals of Scientific Merit, Science 2018" are intended to reward national or foreign individuals who, due to their high professional qualities and the fulfillment of their duty, have distinguished themselves for a valuable and exceptional contribution to the development of science or scientific culture in Portugal.

João Guerreiro has a master's degree in Rural Planning and Environment and a doctorate in Economic Sciences.

In addition to being a former rector of the University of Algarve, João Guerreiro was president of the Algarve Region Coordination Committee and president of the Algarve Operational Program – PROA.

He also chaired the Independent Technical Commission on the 2017 fires, appointed by the Assembly of the Republic.

He is currently the president of the National Commission for Access to Higher Education (CNAES).
