AHETA and SITESE sign new Collective Bargaining Agreement for the Algarve hotel industry

New CCT updates salaries and benefits for hotel workers in the Algarve, but only applies to AHETA affiliates

The Association of Hotels and Touristic Enterprises of the Algarve (AHETA) and the Union of Workers and Technicians in Services, Commerce, Restaurants and Tourism (SITESE) signed a new Collective Labor Agreement for the hotel and tourism sector in the Algarve.

The new CCT (Collective Labor Agreement) will be in force for a period of two years and takes effect on June 1, 2018 and updates «the salary scales, as well as the respective subsidies, whether for languages and food, or the allowances for failures ».

According to AHETA, the agreement was mediated/conciliated by the Ministry of Labor, through the General Directorate of Employment and Labor Relations (DGERT), having been formalized on July 26, in Lisbon, between the presidents of the two institutions, Elidérico Viegas and Luiz Azinheira.

For the hotel association and the Union, the approved Salary Tables «reflect the realities of the current regional labor market».

The agreement now signed only covers hotels and developments affiliated with AHETA, and is not applicable to establishments that are not registered with the association.

The parties also agreed to continue negotiations, within the scope of the Ministry of Labor, through DGERT, with a view to reviewing and updating the clauses, namely with regard to the introduction of successive legislative amendments to the General Law (Labour Code), including those recently approved by the Assembly of the Republic, resulting from the agreement reached between the Social Partners, within the scope of the Economic and Social Council.

Recently, AHETA had gone public complain about the lack of labor for the hotel and tourism sector in the Algarve. According to the hotel association, the lack of labor, «in quantity and quality to meet the business needs of the hotel and tourism sector», is «one of the biggest structural problems in the Algarve today».

In response, the Union of Workers in the Hotel, Tourism, Restaurants and Similar Industry of the Algarve responded that the problem of lack of labor in the hotel and tourism industry, it is due to “low wages and lack of working conditions”.
