Union says lack of labor in tourism is due to "low wages"

Union warns of the need to "value wages and ensure stable employment relationships"

The problem of the lack of labor, in hotels and tourism, is due to «low wages and the lack of working conditions», denounces the Union of Workers in the Hotel, Tourism, Restaurant and Similar Industry in the Algarve.

In a statement, the union defends that the "so much announced lack of labor in the hotel and catering sector, contrary to the reasons given by the employers, is, above all, a consequence of low wages and the brutal worsening of working conditions and the lives of workers”

The Association of Hotels and Touristic Enterprises of the Algarve (AHETA) went public this week to denounce that the lack of manpower, «in quantity and quality to meet the business needs of the hotel and tourism sector», it is «one of the biggest structural problems in the Algarve today.

For the union, these "are statements that seek to hide the responsibility of those who make them, as well as the difficult reality experienced by those who work in this sector."

Furthermore, they are “appeals for greater public support from Governments to channel a few more million euros from the State Budget into the pockets of bosses in the name of combating precariousness and seasonality”. The “easier to exploit” foreign labor solution is also frowned upon by this union.

Sul Informação has already reported on the fact that the Algarve is looking for workers in other regions and abroad to combat this labor shortage.

In the same communiqué, sent this Friday, 20 July, the union considers that "this is a sector that has been achieving successive record results, while work is increasingly precarious" with "increasing hours long and unregulated, work rhythms increasingly painful and rights increasingly called into question'.

To this is added the fact that it is "a sector where there is a large rotation of workers in the same job position because more and more temporary workers, internships and service provision are used, thereby harming the quality of the service », denounces the Workers Union of the Hotel, Tourism, Restaurants and Similar Industry of the Algarve.

To reverse this situation, it is considered necessary to value wages, ensure stable employment relationships, schedules that allow for the reconciliation of professional activity with personal and family life, safeguard transport between the place of residence and the workplace , replenish professional portfolios to improve the qualification of workers and enable career progression, enhance collective contracting», concludes the statement.
