The municipality of Olhão will celebrate “April, month for the prevention of child abuse”, by joining the Blue Ribbon Campaign, an international initiative that aims to raise awareness of the need to protect children, as an objective of the entire community.

Students from the 2nd and 3rd cycles and secondary education in the municipality will be invited to participate in a contest, which consists of decorating a blue bow, which represents the struggle to protect children from abuse. The participating works will be exhibited between the 10th and 20th of May, at the Algarve Outlet, in Olhão, in order to «alert and sensitize the population to the subject», explains the City Council.

Students are invited to participate in a contest, which consists of decorating a blue bow, which represents the fight to protect children from abuse. The participating works will be exhibited from May 10th to 20th at the Algarve Outlet, in order to alert and
sensitize the population to the theme.

The City Council of Olhão explains that «the Blue Ribbon Campaign began in 1989 in the United States, when Bonnie W.Finney tied a blue ribbon to the antenna of her car, as a tribute to her two grandchildren, both victims of abuse. The blue, which symbolizes the color of the injuries, would serve him as a constant reminder of his struggle to protect children from violence and neglect».

For the municipality, "the story of this grandmother demonstrates the effect that the concern of a single citizen can have in raising public awareness of abuse against children, in preventing it and in promoting and protecting their rights."

In addition to the schools, the initiative involves other entities in the municipality, such as the Health Center of Olhão, the School Health team, the Commission for the Protection of Children and Youth of Olhão, groups of schools and the Algarve Outlet.
