Aquatic theatre, “Jazz nas Adegas” and “Cataplay” liven up Algarve in March

O "Into the Sea", more concerts from Algarve International Music Festival (FIMA), the “Jazz in the Cellars” and another cine-concert of “Video Lucem” are some of the «unique moments» that will happen in the Algarve, in March. 

This month continues the program "365Algarve", with new experiences in the different areas of culture, opening the doors to theatre, music, cinema and gastronomy, without ever missing the visits that give life to the heritage of the Algarve region.

From the 15th to the 18th of March, in Monchique, and from the 22nd to the 25th of March, in Marmelete, the play As Noites das Facas Longas – Theater in the medronho distilleries will lead participants to discover the alchemical rituals of the distillation of the medronho, to the rhythm of stories, songs, dances and with texts by Afonso Cruz and Sandro William Junqueira.

The initiative comes within the scope of the “Lavrar o Mar” project, whose other production, in March, will be the aquatic theater play “Mar Adentro”, to be held from March 29 to April 1 at the Municipal Swimming Pools of Aljezur.

This month it will also be possible to attend the Festival T – Albufeira International Theater Festival, which will take place between March 23rd and 27th, at the Albufeira Municipal Auditorium.

The 33rd FIMA kicked off with an inaugural concert by Elisabete Matos, one of the most prestigious Portuguese sopranos internationally and will be part of the March cultural agenda.

The German composer Beethoven is at the forefront of the March program of “365 Algarve”. The violin concert “Beethoven!”, with the Orquestra Clássica do Sul conducted by conductor Pedro Meireles, takes to the stage of the Cineteatro de São Brás de Alportel, on March 16th.

In this concert, Pedro Meireles will perform the dual role of conductor and soloist, in the interpretation of two Beethoven masterpieces: the Violin Concerto and the Seventh Symphony.

The Municipal Theater of Portimão hosts the concert for piano and orchestra op58 nr4 by LV Beethoven, performed by soloist Artur Pizarro, accompanied by conductor Nikolai Lalov conducting the Cascais and Oeiras Chamber Orchestra (24th March).

On the 23rd of March, the Municipal Library Auditorium in Castro Marim hosts the concert by the Orquestra Clássica do Sul Chamber Music Group, a program that aims to highlight some of Mozart's most important chamber music works, highlighting the wind instruments.

“Jazz nas Adegas” has two sessions in March: the first at Quinta do Barranco Longo, in Algoz, with PLINT (10 March) and the second at Quinta da Vinha, in Silves, with Badalo Quarteto (17th of March).

In the visual arts, from the 3rd of March to the 8th of April, the exhibition of painting will be on display at the Museu de Portimão “Beach”, by Ana André. With this work, Ana André takes visitors to the beach of Faro, where the artist spent large parts of her childhood summers.

Taking as its starting point an ancient legend of São Brás de Alportel, the photography exhibition “Tochas”, by Vasco Célio, can be visited at the Municipal Gallery in that city, between March 29th and May 6th.

Gastronomy is one of the key elements of the Algarve's cultural identity that “365 Algarve” does not neglect. On March 24th, the AlGharb.Come Festival promotes a cooking workshop at the Hotel and Tourism School of Vila Real de Santo António.

CataPlay, the piece that makes the culinary experience a true spectacle, will show, in two sessions, how the traditions inherited from the various civilizations that lived in the Algarve are passed on from generation to generation through a set of cataplana recipes, which prove that there is a specialty for each state of mind.

It is possible to participate in this Cataplana Algarvia tasting show on March 25 at Tertúlia Algarvia, in Faro, and on the 28th and 29th of March at the Praça do Mar Art Gallery, in Quarteira.

This month, “Video Lucem” promotes the screening of Sherlock Jr, by Buster Keaton, set to live by Noiserv, and Ring Up The Curtain by Harold Lloyd, set to live by João Frade, on the 8th at 21:30 at the Igreja Matriz in Ferragudo . Admission is free.

After the 2017 edition, which attracted thousands of visitors, the Municipality of Alcoutim organizes, from the 23rd to the 25th of March, the second edition of the Festival of Contraband – Tráfico de Artes no Guadiana, with a poster of cultural events ranging from performances to music, theater, circus art, promotion of traditional crafts, among many others.

This is a unique opportunity to make the pedestrian crossing of the Guadiana River, as smugglers used to do in the 30s. You can also participate in the recreation of a market of the time.

Through a series of theatrical exercises designed for a place, based on the history and stories of that place, Sítios com História intends to involve the public and transport them to the time of several emblematic characters of Lagos and Vila do Bispo.

The staging will take place on March 31, at the Renaissance Wall of Cerca Nova, in Lagos, where a Friar celebrates the local religious life, while a guide makes his first overseas trips and a soldier laments the conditions of combat against the enemies that assail the coast.

For your part, Faro Unveiled continues to be present in the “365 Algarve” program, with another session on the 27th.
