The Regional Delegation of the Order of Economists (OE) wants to help, more and more, to think about the Algarve and wants to become the voice of the region «at national and international level». This is the great goal assumed by Luís Serra Coelho, the new president of this structure, who took office this Thursday, January 11th.

Luís Coelho succeeds Pedro Pimpão, who is currently the vice-president of the Chamber of Loulé and has been in charge of the OE delegation in the Algarve since its foundation in 2015. The president is new, but he has been linked to this project for a long time, as he belonged to the group that promoted the creation of the Regional Directorate.

Maybe that's why he has a well-defined idea of what the priorities of this structure should be. «The Algarve needs to have a voice. It is often pointed out that the Algarve has no strength, has no capacity to reach out to those who decide and does not make itself heard», framed Luís Coelho.

«We feel, depending on the people who belong to our group, the accumulated experience and the connections they have, that it makes sense that the Order has something to say in the affirmation of the Algarve at national and international level. I feel that, in a few years' time, we will have an OE with an opinion that will be able to deepen the contribution it makes to the region. We want to be the voice of the Algarve», he assured.

This is a «personal» goal of Luís Coelho, who feels that «the Algarve has very little power in the national sphere and that everything that can be done to affirm this spectacular region must be done».

The new president of the OE structure also listed three other major goals for the four-year term that began today. One of them “is to bring the Order closer to civil society, something that is fundamental. We have to be able to do things with companies and associations, something that also involves getting closer to the media».

A greater connection to the University of Algarve is another of the goals outlined. «From the start, for the sake of survival: without being able to attract new members, in the long term, we will disappear. But also thinking about the students. If the Order is well organized and has a winning project, all those who graduate in the sphere of economics and management can find here a comfort platform, but also an easier way to access the job market and some coaching». considered Luís Coelho.

“We also want to bring economists into the Order. We feel that we have some way to go in this field, because we launch initiatives and we do not always have the feedback that we would like, in terms of attendance», he added.

The inauguration ceremony was also attended by Rui Leão Martinho, President of the OE, who left a challenge to the new direction of the regional delegation. «It would be important for the Algarve to have at least one annual event that identifies it» and put it on the map, he considered.

The new management has a new president, but has many members of the outgoing team, namely Carlos Manso, Cláudio Lima, Pedro Alves and Tiago Toregão. In the Regional Assembly, João Calçada Correia is the new president, remaining Francisco Severino and Maria José da Encarnação.
