The blog “Lugar ao Sul” will distinguish, on February 5th, Professor Doctor João Guerreiro as the Algarve personality of the year 2017.
The blog “Place to the South" was started in October 2016, conceived as a «platform for reflection and plural opinion around the Algarve and the issues that interest and affect the region, in order to contribute to the increase of critical mass». This blog is, since last year, a partner of Sul Informação.
This year, the blog's members decided to «create a distinction that symbolically pays homage and thanks to an Algarve personality who, in the same spirit, has stood out in the past year, contributing to the prestige of the Algarve, as a region and in the context of the its contribution to the country».
The personality chosen for the year 2017 is João Guerreiro.
The public ceremony will take place at the Salão Nobre of the Municipality of Tavira, from 18 pm on the next 5th of February, organized by Lugar ao Sul, with the collaboration of the Municipality of Tavira.
João Guerreiro is «a person who for many years has struggled for the enhancement and projection of the Algarve, constantly affirming the need for a strategic project that aggregates, organizes and dynamizes the region», «not only through the work carried out in the various positions of responsibility that he occupied in the past, from the presidency of the then Algarve Regional Coordination Commission to the Rectory of the University of Algarve, but also for his thought and action as a citizen», recall those responsible for “Lugar ao Sul”.
In 2017, following the dramatic fires in the Pedrógão area and also the fires in October, «he was the person who was assigned the coordinating mission of the Independent Technical Commission responsible for investigating the causes of the tragedies and also for drawing up proposals for the future of the institutional, territorial and operational organization of the country».
«This unequivocal recognition at national level of the capacity and competence of Professor João Guerreiro is a prestigious note for the Algarve, and also a motto for internal reflection, as it is one of the most deprived regions in terms of territorial planning and competitiveness that is chosen the person who is responsible for one of the most profound and serious tasks in this chapter, when their ideas do not always have the deserved and due attention in the South», they conclude.
