Mendes Bota receives “Maria Veleda” on 16 December

The delivery ceremony of the 4th edition of the Regional Award “Maria Veleda” to José Mendes Bota takes place on the 16th of December, at 16:30 pm, at the Cine-Teatro Louletano, in Loulé. 

The “Maria Veleda” Regional Award is an initiative of the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, which highlights and recognizes the cultural activity of Algarve personalities, protagonists of interventions for gender equality, citizenship and non-discrimination, recommended in the V National Plan, the during the period 2014-2017, by the Integrated Information and Knowledge System (SIIC) .

«Pioneer in the fight for the education of children and for women's rights, for the ideals of justice, freedom, equality and democracy, Maria Veleda (1871-1955), pseudonym of Maria Carolina Frederico Crispim, was born in Faro, in 1871, having exercised the profession of primary teacher», says the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve.

The attribution of this year's prize to Mendes Bota was deliberated in a meeting on October 20th, by the elements of the jury. This is constituted by Alexandra Rodrigues Gonçalves, regional director of Culture of the Algarve, who chaired the meeting, Ana Paula Amendoeira, regional director of Culture of Alentejo, António Branco, rector of the University of Algarve (UAlg), Idálio Revez, journalist of “Público ”, José Carlos Barros, landscape architect, Lídia Jorge, writer, Mirian Tavares, teacher and researcher, Natividade Monteiro, teacher and researcher, and Paulo Cunha, music teacher.

At the evaluation meeting of the set of applications received, the jury decided to distinguish Mendes Bota «for recognizing, in his life path, the exceptional work, national and international, developed in the scope of citizenship, ethics, gender equality, in dignification of women, in equal opportunities between men and women, in the defense of human rights and in the prevention and criminalization of violence against women», explains the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve.

"All the work carried out in various positions in the Council of Europe identifies it with the objective of the award", he adds.

At this ceremony, Mendes Bota will receive 5 thousand euros, as well as a commemorative medal, creation and offer of the company “NOVA CORTÇA”.

The event is supported by the production of Associação Casa da Cultura de Loulé. This public ceremony will include moments of poetry and music.

José Mendes Bota was born on August 4, 1955 in Loulé, graduated in Economics, completed a postgraduate degree in Advanced Management and studied Law. In addition to having been mayor of Loulé from 1982 to 1985, he was also a deputy in the Assembly of the Republic, elected by the PSD, in the III, IV, V, VI, VII, X and XI Legislatures and a deputy in the European Parliament from 1989 to 1994 and 1998 to 1999.

Mendes Bota took over, in May 2016, functions of "High-Level Political and Parliamentary Adviser" in the Delegation of the European Union to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, being the number two of this diplomatic representation.
