Mendes BootThe Algarve's José Mendes Bota has just assumed the functions of “High-Level Political and Parliamentary Adviser” in the European Union Delegation to the Council of Europe, in Strasbourg, being the number two of this diplomatic representation.

Mendes Bota had resigned, a year and a half ago, from his duties as a PSD deputy elected by the Algarve, to work, in Brussels, at the European Commission, as a member of the cabinet of Commissioner Carlos Moedas. In these functions, she followed closely sectors such as Bioeconomy, Agriculture, Fisheries, Forests, the so-called Social Sciences and Humanities, as well as issues of Gender Equality in Science and Research and relations with the Committee of the Regions, among others.

The former Algarvian deputy was selected for this mission, for a period of four years, following a competition opened by the European External Action Service.

His long experience in institutions such as the European Parliament, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the European Interparliamentary Assembly for Security and Defense, between 1988 and 2014, contributed to the success of the candidacy, to which the service has been added since then until now. provided at the European Commission.

The European Union currently has 139 delegations around the world, eight of which to international organisations, as is the case, and which are politically dependent on the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, who also exercises the functions of Vice-President of the European Commission.

Among other attributions, Mendes Bota will focus on the activity of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, on the relations between the European Parliament and APCE, as well as on cooperation programs between the European Union and the Council of Europe for the defense of human rights, the strengthening of democratic institutions and the promotion of the principles of the rule of law.
