Let's "Lavrar o Mar" with a new circus, "paste" in the Algarve style and sonorous vegetables

Have you ever thought about attending a concert where turnips, carrots or sweet potatoes make music? Or in making a pasta Italian with Monchique sausages and a touch Asian? The new edition of “Lavrar o Mar” makes all this (and much more) possible. Until January, there are four major events of this project, taking place in Aljezur and Monchique. And it will even be able to enter 2018 “in a different and suggestive way”, riding the acrobatics of the Novo Circo.

This is a program that starts on the 16th of November, at the headquarters of Rancho Folclórico do Rogil, at 19:30 pm, as part of the Sweet Potato Festival of Aljezur. To kick things off, there's “Pasta e Basta, um Mambo Italiano”.

Is the name suggestive? The initiative also wants to be. «What is very original is that the public will learn how to make fresh pasta. There will be 70 people, for three hours, to learn how to make pasta as it is done in Italy», explains Madalena Victorino, one of those responsible for programming “Lavrar o Mar”, in an interview with Sul Informação.

The menu will include three different pasta dishes, adding sweet potatoes and sausages as condiments.

In addition, there will be two people (one from the East and the other from Africa) who will introduce an Asian and African component to the dishes. Thus, from the dialogue between various cultures, foods that seem to bring together “a little of the world” will be born.

«In the middle of this, a very beautiful story written by Afonso Cruz is intertwined, bringing theater into the dish. The story takes place in moments when you have to wait, for example while the pasta is baking. These moments of pause provide the advance of the story, which began to be told at the beginning», reveals the cultural programmer.

"Folder and Enough"

Not wanting to reveal too much about what will happen, know that this will be a story centered on a prisoner sentenced to death, who decides to write his last letter to the daughter he didn't see grow up.

His last wish before he died was to eat the three best dishes his lover cooked... and which contained "everyone".

As for the dates, in addition to the premiere, on November 16th, there is "Pasta e Basta" on the 19th of the same month, at 19:30 pm, at the Rancho do Rogil headquarters, but also in Monchique, on November 30th, 1st, 2nd and December 3, at 19:30 pm, at Parque da Mina.

And not even children will be left out of this initiative. On the 19th, at 11:30 am, at Rogil, there is a version for the younger ones, repeating itself on December 3, at the same time, but in Monchique.

"It will be possible for families to bring their children to learn how to make fresh pasta, but also to listen and be inside a story." And what story will this be? “It will have to do with the children not being afraid of being cooked in a big pot, as in some children's stories”, says Madalena Victorino.

Tickets cost 10 euros for adults and children over 12 years old, and 5 euros for children aged 6 to 12 years.

Another of the events scheduled for this launch of the “Lavrar o Mar” project is the “Conciorto”. In other words: a concert of vegetables from the garden, taking place on the 22nd, 23rd, 24th and 25th of November, at 19:30 pm, at the bistro restaurant “Várzea”, in Aljezur.

These vegetables will then be «sounded» to make music during a dinner in which the vegetables, which also serve as a musical instrument, will be eaten.

A "Concert"

The two Italian musicians Bagini and Carlone manage the vegetables, in musical terms, and the Head Luigi prepares the gastronomic part. If the proposal already seems attractive, it will also have another attraction. Before dinner, anyone who wants to can stroll through the vegetable garden of this “Várzea”, from where the vegetables will be harvested – the big ones. travel of the initiative.

Tickets cost 15 euros, excluding drinks. Also in Aljezur, on the 25th, at 11:00 am, there will be a mini concert at the Market, with free entry.

In Monchique, it will be a little different. The historic “Barlefante” will host the “Conciorto”, where there will also be no lack of such “musical vegetables”, but instead of dinner, there will be vegetable soup to serve.

The programming of this “Lavrar o Mar” wants, like last year, to put Monchique and Aljezur in “turbulence” (in the good sense of the term) and so it will be in November that “Vassilissa” will premiere, adding another event to the rich programming.

It is a show for both children and adults who accompany them. «It is a very beautiful Russian tale: a wonderful show about the initiation to the theater ritual. The children will witness how a girl, among them, becomes the heroine and protagonist of the story», reveals Madalena Victorino.

This is a story "of the most traditional of children's imagination". «When she is about to die, Vassilissa's mother calls her and gives her a doll, telling her: “whenever you're worried you can talk to this doll and don't forget to always feed her”», tells cultural programmer.

Vasilissa

The doll becomes your strength. Vassilissa's father remarries and the protagonist's stepmother doesn't want her at home. So Vassilissa is sent to the forest in search of fire. “It is a metaphor for children's growth and entry into real life, which is not rosy. There are obstacles, hardships», says Madalena.

At a certain point, a girl from the audience will also enter the scene and it is from this dialogue between witch and girl that this play will also be done.

“Vassilissa” will be shown at Espaço+ in Aljezur on November 30, at 10:30 am and 14:30 pm, in shows for schools, and on December 1, at 11:00 am, for families. In Monchique, in the old sawmill, the initiative for schools will be on December 11, at 10:30 am and 14:30 pm, and on December 10, at 16:30 pm, for families.

Tickets cost 3 euros for adults and 2 euros for children.

The “great moment” of this first phase of “Lavrar o Mar” appears in the form of acrobatics: the “wonderful show of a new circus” “Klaxon”, by the company “Akoreacro”. There will be six acrobats and five musicians, from the Russian circus school, which has an «exceptional technical rigor».

In the tent, to be set up at the Monchique Heliport, there will be «air acrobats who do incredible things that we don't think are possible».

Although last year's new circus show “Maintenat ou Jamais” was a success, this “Klaxon” will be “very different”. “Last year, they were acrobats who worked with the bicycle for the acrobatics, this is the air, they are air acrobats”, explains Madalena Victorino.

"Klaxon"

The tent will be bigger this year, welcoming 500 people each night (in 2016 there were 400). The shows will be on the 28th, 29th, 30th, 31st and 1st of January, always at 21 pm, with the possibility of “turning” the year with a ride with “Klaxon”.

For those who decide to pass the New Year's Eve “Lavrar o Mar”, there will be “certainly champagne, plenty and other delicacies from the mountains, with the collaboration of people who cook wonderfully around here”.

Those who do not want to go on the 31st can go on the first day of the new year, reviving the tradition of, on January 1st, «people have lunch outside and go to the circus»… which will be a “new circus” here.

Tickets cost 7 euros for adults and 3 euros for children.

Madalena Victorino has no doubts: this is a «diverse program that will please all the people who live here and who visit us». Not least because all the initiatives are «shows in which people don't just see passively».

“We really like the participation, seeing with our hands, with our body or with our ears. The sensitivity of art touches us and seems very interesting to us».

As last year, “Lavrar o Mar” has the support of 365Algarve. Commissioner Dália Paulo, in an interview given to the program “Impressões”, from Rádio Universitária do Algarve (RUA) FM and from Sul Informação, considered that this is a «winning project of the 1st edition» of 365Algarve, directed by «two people who have a lot of world»: Madalena Victorino and Giacomo Sclalisi.

«They bring us the best there is. Their “world” allows them something else that is not as easy as that: winning over local communities. There is no tourism, nor cultural programming, without who is on the ground, who thinks about it», he considered.

For Dália Paulo, “Lavrar o Mar” means that, until May, there is «always an attraction» to go to Aljezur and Monchique.

Therefore, revealed the commissioner of 365Algarve, the two responsible for “Lavrar o Mar” “are working with tourist agents in the territory to make packages that not only include cultural programming, but a weekend or a week in the territory. That interests us».

In addition to 365Algarve, this edition of “Lavrar o Mar” has the support of CRESC Algarve 2020 and the Municipalities of Aljezur and Monchique.

And, without wanting to reveal too much (all in good time!), let's know that for the second batch There will be three artist residencies from January to May, but also “Medronho: A night of long knives or everything in one night” and “Aqua Theater”. Promise...
