The second phase of the redevelopment work on the beach at Monte Gordo, which involves the demolition of the old beach support and the construction of new structures in standardized materials, will start on November 15th.

These new structures will be at the same level as the existing bridge.

The plan, already approved by the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), contemplates the construction of 18 new concessionaires – which will replace the current ones – being accessible in the future either through the central corridor or from Avenida Marginal.

«It should be remembered that the Coastal Waterfront Management Plan (POOC), approved by the former socialist executive of the municipality, only provided for the construction of eight beach supports, but through its review and the series of meetings held between the City Council and the APA, it was possible to install 18 units», notes Conceição Cabrita, Mayor of Vila Real de Santo António.

"In this way, all entrepreneurs who had activities on the beach and had their situation regularized did not need to submit to a tender, putting an end to the system of precarious licenses that had been in force until now", continues the mayor.

According to the stipulated by the owners and by the APA, the current restaurants will be open until the 1st of November, after which date they will have to release the structures.

The demolition process will be conducted by the Municipality of VRSA, while the construction of the new beach supports will be supported by the owners.

«This means that, next summer, we will already have a beach with better quality, new accesses and new support, thus completing one of the largest urban and environmental requalification operations carried out in our municipality», continues Conceição Cabrita.

With this measure, the municipality continues the renovation of one of its main bathing areas, whose first phase, completed in July, provided the beach with the longest walkway in the eastern Algarve, with a length of 3 kilometers.

«The redevelopment of the beach of Monte Gordo It is an imposition of the Vilamoura Coastal Ordination Plan (POOC) – VRSA, which provides for the creation of accesses and support structures that do not collide with the dune cordon. Across the Algarve there have been similar operations on several beaches, almost all of them based on the construction of raised walkways», explains the Chamber of VRSA, which coordinates the intervention, although this is the responsibility of the APA.

And will the current bridge maintain its current height? "Not. As happened in the requalification work of Manta Rota beach, the reconstruction of the dune will cover practically the entire support structure of the walkway, surpassing the current height/elevation. The tendency is for the walkway to be at the same level as the beach», he concludes.
