The new elevated pedestrian walkway of Monte Gordo was inaugurated last Friday, July 14th. With three kilometers in length, this is already the largest structure of its kind in the Eastern Algarve, but the idea of Vila Real de Santo António City Council, the promoter of the work, is to extend it for another four kilometers, to the county seat, making -the «largest in the Algarve and one of the most extensive in the country».

The first phase of the work, now inaugurated, cost one million euros, an amount that allowed not only to install the walkway itself, but also to provide it with lighting throughout its length, as well as rest areas and a pedestrian and parking circuit. leisure.

The same amount will be invested in the extension of the walkway to VRSA, along the National Forest of Dunas Litorais, work which is scheduled to start in October.

For now, whoever uses this walkway has access to the sandy beach of Monte Gordo, but also to all the beach facilities there.

At the inauguration of this structure, Luís Gomes, president of the municipality of Vila Real, said that the main objective of the investment was «the reaffirmation of what was the first bathing area in the Algarve and where Algarve tourism was born, in the 60s, with the construction of the Hotel Vasco da Gama». "The seafront promenade forced a great deal of consultation, but the good results are in sight," he said.

The structure was named “Passeio Marítimo Dr. António Almeida Santos”, “in honor of the former President of the Assembly of the Republic, a frequent visitor to this locality and who greatly contributed to the tourist consolidation of the beach of Monte Gordo, with which it had ties of affinity', according to the Chamber of VRSA.

The rehabilitation of the beach of Monte Gordo joins the process of requalification of the seafront (sidewalk), promoted by the municipality of VRSA and valued at 2,2 million euros. The bridge will be supported by the Operational Program for Sustainability and Efficiency in the Use of Resources and by the Portuguese Environment Agency.
