The Alportel Church has already reopened, after the end of the rehabilitation and restoration works that it was subjected to recently.

In this intervention, the works included the renovation of the chapel's exterior, the removal of ruins inlaid on the Chapel's walls and the renovation of the electrical installation and also the repair of the main chapel's interior walls.

«This intervention had an important contribution from a son of the land, Colonel Manuel Brito Guerreio Júnior, who before his death edited at his own expense a book he authored on Alportel's Memoirs of the Earth, whose sale reverted entirely to raise funds for this work», tells the City of São Brás.

The collaboration of the heirs of the removed ruins was also decisive for the successful execution of the work.

The City Council contributed with equipment, a technical team to monitor the work and an investment of 6 thousand euros.

A new intervention is planned for the Alportel Church in 2018. In this second phase, the work will focus on removing the ruins on the north side of the chapel to allow the creation of a patio around the chapel's surroundings.

«The appreciation of the religious heritage is a fundamental axis of the municipality's cultural policy, as it contributes to the preservation of this valuable legacy and to the tourist development of the territories. This intervention also allowed the consolidation of urban renewal actions, developed in Aldeia do Alportel», considers the municipality.

“These works continued a series of interventions that have been carried out by the Parish of São Brás de Alportel, with the financial support of the municipality, to preserve the valuable religious heritage of São Brasense”, he adds.

“Recently the Churches of São Romão and São Sebastião were also the target of some works, in this mission it continues to preserve these buildings of enormous historical value”, he concludes.
