Applications for the 4th edition of the «Maria Veleda» Regional Award, an initiative of the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, as part of the V National Plan for Gender Equality, Citizenship and Non-Discrimination – 2014-2017, are open until 15 September.

The award is intended to “highlight and recognize the merit of Algarve personalities whose long cultural and civic journey has revealed them as protagonists of particularly relevant and innovative interventions in the Region”.

Since the creation of the Prize, they have been distinguished Margarida Tengarrinha (in the 1st edition) e José Louro (3rd edition).

With the 4th edition|2017, the participation of that Regional Directorate of Culture in the Strategic Area “Promotion of Equality between Women and Men in Public Policies”/Measure 21 of the V National Plan for Gender Equality, Citizenship and Non-Discrimination 2014- 2017.

Any citizen or regional institution, public or private, may submit proposals to be sent by post to the headquarters of the Regional Directorate of Culture, at Rua Dr. Pinheiro e Rosa, nº 1, 8005-546 Faro, or delivered in person.

The Prize has an associated value of 5.000 euros and a commemorative medal, produced by Nova Cortiça, which once again considered supporting this distinction.

The designation of the award is intended to remember and honor Maria Veleda, born in Faro (1871-1955), a pioneer primary teacher in the fight for the education of children and women's rights, for the ideals of justice, freedom, equality and democracy.
