The first Algarve Wine Symposium will take place on May 11, at the Algarve Hotel and Tourism School, in Faro.

The initiative, promoted by the Algarve Wine Commission (CVA), will be divided into three panels, throughout the day, on Viticulture, Enology and Promotion/Markets. For each of them, experts and those responsible for research or innovative initiatives for the Algarve Wine sector were invited.

Carlos Gracias, president of CVA, told the Sul Informação that this «first edition of the symposium, which has a very technical character, was scheduled for Faro, capital of the region, to mark the independence of this body». "What we have to defend and affirm is the quality of the Algarve's wines, without regard to the locality of the counties", he added, in a clear allusion to the a dispute that the CVA maintains with the Câmara de Lagoa, regarding the creation, by this municipality, of the brand «Lagoa, Capital of the Wines of the Algarve».

Thus, at the first panel of the Symposium, dedicated to Viticulture, which begins at 11:00 am, Sónia Rodrigues, from CVA, will present the SIAC-Qualification project «Algarve Wines & Spirits». Next, Pedro Tereso will talk about sustainable viticulture and the work that has been done in Morgado do Reguengo.

The improvement and preservation of the Algarve variety “Negra Mole” will be the theme of the communication by Antero Martins, from the Provid/Instituto Superior de Agronomia, followed by the intervention of António Maçanita, on “Success factors of Vitivultura in the Algarve”.

Ending this morning panel, Armindo Rosa and João Costa, from the Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Fisheries, will address the theme of the «CEAT Ampelographic Collection – Preservation, Characterization and Study – wine and table varieties».

In the afternoon, the panel dedicated to Oenology begins at 14:30 pm, with a presentation by Manuel Lima, from IVDP – Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e Porto, on «Sensory profile of wines from Portugal».

Then, Fernando Pedrosa (Proenol) will talk about «Biotechnology oenological tools and strategies for hot areas», such as the Algarve.

The third and final panel, dedicated to Promotion and the Markets, begins at 16 pm with the communication «Protection of Trademarks and Designations of Origin», by the lawyer Luís Sommer Ribeiro.

This is followed by the presentation of the Interactive Map of Algarve Wines, by Arturo Gonçalves (PlotBiz) and “O Mercado Global dos Vinhos”, by Jorge Monteiro, President of ViniPortugal.

The closing and delivery of awards of the X Algarve Wine Contest are scheduled for 17:30 pm.
