Estação Imagem Award exhibition arrives for the first time in the Algarve

The Estação Imagem 2016 Award exhibition will be presented in the Algarve for the first time, opening at the Municipal Park of Sítio das Fontes, in Estômbar (Lagoa), from 7 April to 6 May, and then at the António Rosa Mendes Library, in University of Algarve's Gambelas Campus, in Faro, from May 11th to June 9th.

This will be the first initiative of the 2017 Lagoa Photography Meetings, which, for the fourth consecutive year, will take place within the scope of a partnership between the Municipality of Lagoa and the University of Algarve.

Estação Imagem is a non-profit cultural association founded in 2007 and that has become notable in Portugal for the annual organization of an international award for photojournalism.

This is the Estação Imagem Award, which had its 1st edition in 2010 and, thus, in 2017 it will celebrate eight years of recognition of the best works of Portuguese photojournalists, the PALOP and Galicia, as well as foreigners residing in these territories.

After the results of each competition are known, a traveling exhibition is organized. It is the exhibition for the Estação Imagem 2016 Award that will now reach the Algarve, by the hand of the Lagoa 2017 Photography Meetings.

According to Nuno Loureiro, director of Encontros, «this collaboration between Associação Estação Imagem, the Municipality of Lagoa and the University of Algarve should be extended over the next few years, so that the Algarve permanently integrates the itinerary circuit of the annual exhibition ».

In the 2016 edition, the competition adopted the name of Estação Imagem Viana do Castelo Award, as this municipality from Minho is its main sponsor, to which are added Casa da Imprensa, RTP, Agência LUSA and the Público newspaper.

Portuguese photojournalist Mário Cruz was the main winner of the 2016 edition of the Estação Imagem Award, with the photographic series «Talibés, Escravos Contemporâneos», recorded in Senegal and Guinea-Bissau in May and June 2015. It was a highly awarded work, already who also won the 1st prize in the category Contemporary Issues No. World Press Photo 2016: POYi 2016 – Picture of the International Year in category Is your Reporting Picture Story, and was also recognized in the Magnum Photography Awards 2016.

Another Portuguese photojournalist included in the Estação Imagem 2016 Award, in the News category, is José Carlos Carvalho, with the series «Who laughs last laughs better». José Carlos Carvalho collaborated with ENFOLA*2016, with two photographs for the initiative «forced migrations», exposed on the exterior walls of the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação, in Carvoeiro, during the summer of last year.
