The rehabilitation works of Palácio Gama Lobos, in Loulé, are already underway. The contract, «one of the main projects in the area of culture planned for 2017 in the municipality of Loulé», was signed last week and should be ready within a year and a half, according to the Loulé Chamber.

The municipality will invest around 1,3 million euros in the restoration of this historic building, with the aim of transforming it into "a hub of creativity". Among other things, the restored Palácio Gama Lobos will become the “home” of the Loulé Criativo project, «which is committed to enhancing the territory's identity with creativity and innovation as its driving force, boosting creative residences and cultural events, supporting the installation and activity of artisans and professionals in the creative sector and stimulating research and experimentation in these themes».

The works will cover two floors of the building, with approximately 1557 square meters of construction area, located at Rua Nossa Senhora de Fátima. The rehabilitation process will involve the preservation and restoration of the building, without “major structural changes, but with the introduction of some architectural and artistic contemporaneities”.

The municipality guaranteed that “sustainable and ecological materials and techniques will be used” and that the intervention will provide the building with “comfort and functionality, taking into account all programmatic requirements”.

«Located in the current urban fabric, Palácio Gama Lobos, a landmark heritage element, is one of the most important buildings emblazoned in civil architecture and the floor style in Loulé. The building is composed of two distinct zones, one of Pombaline construction from the second half of the XNUMXth century. XVIII, which will be the target of this intervention, and another less noble one corresponding to the expansion carried out probably in the beginning of the century. XX, where some sporting activities currently operate», described the Câmara de Loulé.

«With a residential character, its spatial structure is marked by a succession of living spaces characteristic of an urban palace with connections to the rural world. It is also known as the Palace of the Spaniards, due to the fact that it welcomed the Jesuit refugees during the Spanish Civil War”, concluded the municipality.
