Islanders await the arrival of Polis

In 2015, the chameleons of the barrier islands managed to postpone the administrative takeover of houses in the nuclei of the Faro and Hangares, from Ilha da Culatra, and there is still hope on the part of homeowners demolishing that these timid animals can stop the process again.

The judgment of the lawsuit filed by the Chamber of Olhão and the Associação da Ilha do Farol de Santa Maria will take place on February 17, at the Administrative and Fiscal Court of Loulé, days before the expected date for the administrative possession of about 50 houses in the two nuclei, scheduled for February 22nd and March 2nd.

The lawsuit intends to stop the demolition process, arguing that the preservation of the habitat of this protected species on the barrier islands was not taken care of. Câmara and islanders argue that the demolition of houses can only proceed after a plan to safeguard the chameleon's habitat has been drawn up.
