Houses to be demolished in Culatra drop to «about 50» in a new “tide” of notifications from Polis

The Polis Ria Formosa Society has already sent new notifications for administrative possession to owners of «about 50 houses» of the nuclei of the Farole dos Hangares, from Ilha da Culatra. This time, "between 20 and 24" owners will be notified in the Hangars, and "about 30" in the Farol, as revealed to the Sul Informação representatives of residents.

The demolition process on the Ria Formosa barrier islands is, in this way, relaunched, but in a much more soft, as there is a significant decrease in the number of houses scheduled to be demolished, since the previous notification, 81 letters were sent, and a huge decrease in relation to the initial intention, which was to tear down almost 400 houses, in the two nuclei.

This concession by the Government led the then president of the Sociedade Polis Ria Formosa Sebastião Teixeira to present his resignation, which motivated the temporary suspension of the administrative investiture process. A hiatus that was good for the islanders, as they revealed to the Sul Informação Feliciano Júlio and José Lezinho, representatives of the residents of Farole dos Hangares, respectively, the dialogue that has been maintained since then between the islanders and the minister of the environment has allowed several houses to be removed from the list.

The properties saved are on the 40-metre line, where all the houses were supposed to be torn down, but “they are 1st home and for fishermen and shellfish collectors”, according to José Lezinho.

No Farol, explained Feliciano Júlio, «11 of the houses were considered as the 1st dwelling and there are four more that had been poorly notified, a situation that we think has also been resolved». However, efforts continue "to try to save those that are inside the nucleus, but are marked for demolition [because they are less than 40 meters from the Ria]."

“We are gathering the documentation and we are going to send it, to try to save more houses. We'll fight until the end!”, assured Feliciano Júlio.

Efforts to try to save houses are also continuing in the Hangars, with the dialogue centered on “two or three houses”. “But you don't understand why the others go down. For us it is unfair», considered José Lezinho.

The resident of the Hangares nucleus believes, even so, that there is still room for maneuver to save houses, taking into account that the authorities have shown themselves willing to listen to the island's inhabitants. “At least there is dialogue, something that never existed with the previous directors of Sociedade Polis, which is good”, he said.

José Lezinho regretted that the demolition process has advanced without the promised completion of a detailed plan for Ilha da Culatra «and without the houses passing under the jurisdiction of the Chamber, as happens in Armona and it was said that it would be done in Faro».
