Will it be possible to identify the main events of the year through the most searched words in the Priberam Dictionary? The more than 200 words that were at the top of the queries in the most popular Portuguese language online dictionary suggest yes.
Every year, Priberam clears doubts from the most restless minds: over 12 months, millions of people turn to the Priberam Dictionary of the Portuguese Language to check the meaning of a word, to know how to conjugate a verb or even to confirm that a particular word exists.
In 2016, once again, the Priberam Dictionary registered accesses with a direct correlation with national and international events in politics, sport, society, economy, etc.
Through the site http://oanoempalavras.priberam.pt “The Year in Words” is made known: by identifying the most searched words each month, it is possible to review the main events of the year or, at least, events that raised doubts about Portuguese to the most curious internet users.
Among the more than 200 words that were at the top of the queries in the Priberam Dictionary and that can be associated with news or events of a certain day, we can find “veto”, “sicário”, “misogynist”, “marketer”, “discriminate” , “indefectible”, “citizenship”, “bottle”, “rape”, “president”, “great”, “egregious/splendor/mist”, “gambozinos”, “dantesque”, “gimmick”, “garganeiro”, “ impeachement”, “Paralympic”, “contingent”, “pansexual”, “misogynist/xenophobic”, “bataclan”, “depenalization” and “bionic”.
With the launch of the website http://oanoempalavras.priberam.pt, Priberam also launches a challenge: the offer of a FLiP (Priberam's package of proofreading and writing aids that includes the Priberam Dictionary for offline consultation) to the first 12 people who identify the months in which these 12 words were in the top of queries in the Priberam Dictionary in 2016: single parent, revelers, woman, demure, whistleblower, solstice, slaughter, spark, black, mountain passer, mishmash and pyromaniac.
