João Martins secured the title of regional champion in the South of Rallyes by winning the Albufeira Municipality Rally, held last weekend on the roads of this municipality.
The competition had a great participation of the public, namely the Super Especial stage held in the center of Albufeira, which attracted thousands of people, who were not intimidated by the rain that fell on Saturday.
According to Clube Automóvel do Sul, which organizes the event with the support of the City Council of Albufeira, this was «the Super Special held in our region that registered the greatest attendance». And the success was not limited to this inaugural stage.
«The Municipality of Albufeira Rally was considered the best Rally of the South Championship 2016 with an organization that we consider perfect», assured José Martins, the race director. “All the drivers loved the race and even the observer from the Portuguese Federation of Automobile and Karting (FPAK) praised the safety standards that were irreproachable, with all the means required for the safety of this type of competition”, he added.
After accelerating on Saturday on Avenida dos Descobrimentos, the Algarve riders walked on roads in the parishes of Albufeirense Ferreiras and Paderne, on Sunday. In the sections of the interior of the county, there was a heated fight between "pilots who fought until the end for a place on the podium".
«In the middle of the rally, Ricardo Teodósio went off the road, being forced to abandon the race, giving the lead to João Martins, who ended up winning and adding the maximum score in the accounts for the Regional Championship of Rallyes Sul. second place is Paulo Santos, in a Citroën Saxo Cup, leaving the third position for Márcio Marreiros, driver of a Lancer Evo IX», according to Automóvel Clube do Sul.
After the race, the mayor of Albufeira Carlos Silva e Sousa assured that he intends to continue and "reinforce" the commitment to holding this event, "not least because the Algarve has a great tradition of motor sports"
«Albufeira wants to play an important role, either because of the quality and status of our riders, or because of the large number of motorsport fans. [The rally] is here to stay and to constitute yet another attraction for us to be, more and more, a municipality whose dynamics are present throughout the year», concluded the mayor.
The Albufeira Municipality Rally was the 5th race counting for the Southern Regional Rally Championship, which is part of the FPAK calendar.
