gpsOptimized routes, more efficient and inclusive mobility and reduced negative impacts on the environment are some of the advantages that connected and autonomous vehicles will bring to cities. But are the Portuguese convinced of this reality? 84% of the Portuguese answer affirmatively, a figure above the European average (75%).

These data are part of a study by Observador Cetelem on the future of the automobile market and are now revealed in the context of initiatives of the European Mobility Week, which runs from 16 to 22 September.

Connected cars are already a reality and drivers – and cities – are beginning to benefit from the development of automotive technology.

Equipped with GPS navigation systems and real-time navigation applications, such as CarPlay or Android Auto, already made available by different brands of cars, connected cars allow the motorist to optimize commute time, reducing consumption expenses and limiting consumption. polluting emissions.

Reducing fuel consumption (76%), optimizing the route (54%) and concern for the environment (27%) are important criteria for the Portuguese with regard to the connected vehicle, even though the safety of people and of vehicles is the main criterion (78%).

From the perspective of Portuguese motorists, currently common features such as GPS or on-board computer have already changed travel habits, especially in terms of journey times (87%), kilometers traveled (76%), number of journeys (49% ) and choice of means of transport (46%).

“Expectations are high for the connected vehicle, which will become autonomous in the near future. The evolution of automotive technology will be responsible for something fundamental in our society: a more sustainable and intelligent mobility. Less traffic, more space for pedestrians, more safety and a better environment. The change, although gradual, is being well received by the Portuguese, who are even among the most receptive Europeans to new, more economical and ecological forms of mobility», says Diogo Lopes Pereira, Cetelem's marketing director.

For 84% of the Portuguese, the fully autonomous vehicle will be a reality and 44% are interested in using this vehicle without a driver. Among Europeans, they are even the most enthusiastic about the Google Car and the Apple Car, with 61% of respondents saying they would be ready to buy one of the two vehicles.

The European Mobility Week, which takes place from 16 to 22 September, aims to raise awareness among consumers of the benefits of correct planning and rational use of transport, advocating that investment should be used to improve transport instead of serving to solve the problems caused by them.

The economic and marketing analyzes as well as the forecasts were carried out in collaboration with the research and consultancy company BIPE (www.bipe.com). Consumer field surveys were conducted by TNS Sofres during the month of July 2015 in fifteen countries (South Africa, Germany, Belgium, Brazil, China, Spain, United States, France, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Poland , Portugal, United Kingdom and Turkey). In total, more than 8.500 owners of a vehicle acquired in the last five years were questioned.
