Presentation of Loulé Adapta 02-05-2016The Municipality of Loulé will formally join the “Commitment for the Bicycle” Movement, on September 21, during the seminar “Urban Mobility”, which will take place in the auditorium of the Loulé Secondary School. These initiatives are part of the commemorative program of the European Mobility Week, with the seal of the Loulé Adapt.

“Commitment for the Bicycle” is a nationwide initiative, whose main objective is to promote mobility by bicycle, with the motto “More bicycles, better cities, healthier society and economy”.

It is intended, therefore, to place the bicycle issue on the public agenda in its multiple dimensions, align the efforts of the various partners (government, municipalities, universities, sector companies, companies in general, civil society organizations) and take advantage of competences existing in Portugal within the institutional, university, business and civic fabric.

The aim, among other objectives, is to increase the bicycle quota by 10% (currently it represents 0,5% of the total home-work/school trips), to reduce the number of trips in an individual vehicle by the same percentage (at the moment they make up 60% of total home-work/school travel), encourage the purchase of bicycles and stimulate national production, encourage healthy lifestyles and fight obesity or reduce emissions and energy dependence on fossil fuels.

The Chamber of Loulé says that its adhesion to this movement “is part of a policy of sustainability and concern with environmental issues that has been assumed by the executive, namely through projects such as ClimAdaPT and the elaboration of a Municipal Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change».
