There are five, in total, the Algarve athletes who will be present at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games: Ana Cabecinha, twins João Vieira and Sérgio Vieira, in march, José Costa, in sailing, and Pedro Martins, in badminton. The Olympics start this Friday, August 5th.
Born in Alentejo, but living in Olhão for many years, Ana Cabecinha is an Algarvean. After having finished the women's walking test, in the last Olympic Games in London, in 9th place, the athlete from Clube Oriental de Pechão enters the competition on August 19, at 18:30 (Portugal time), for the women's final of the 20 kilometers march.
In the men's competition, there are also two people from the Algarve vying for a place among the medals. The twins João Vieira and Sérgio Vieira, born in Portimão and athletes from Sporting and Benfica, respectively, will try to “march to victory” on August 12, at 18 pm.
The Algarve is also represented in sailing at these Olympics. Newcomer José Costa was born in Tavira, but works for Clube Naval de Cascais, and will partner with Jorge Lima. The sailing competition takes place over several days: 12, 13, 14 and 16 August, more specifically. The start time of the race is always at 17:00.
In badminton, Pedro Martins, born in Portimão and athlete of the ACD CHE Lagoense, repeats his 2012 presence in London. This year, in Rio do Janeiro, high hopes are placed on the athlete's performance., like the Sul Informação did the trick.
Similar to what happens in sailing, in badminton, the Olympic event is divided into several days. Pedro Martins will take the field on August 12th, at 12:00 pm, on August 13th and 14th, at 19:30 pm. And then we'll see…
Finally, he also notes for the golfer Ricardo Melo Gouveia, an athlete who started playing golf as a child, in the Algarve, at the Vilamoura Golf Club. This Olympic Games presence is a first for the golfer, who will play on the 10th, 11th and 12th of August, at 11:30 am, and on the 13th, at 11:00 am.
