Demolitions_Beach of Monte Gordo_June 2016_1The Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) today began the demolitions of two old beach supports in Monte Gordo, structures that were already abandoned and unused, thus marking the beginning of the redevelopment of the seafront of that bathing area, like the Sul Informação reported last week firsthand.

The interventions last for two weeks and foresee the demolition of the old «Firmo» restaurants, next to the Casino de Monte Gordo, and «Celso», at Praia do Coelho, allowing the renovation of those areas and the reconstitution of the dune cordon.

All these actions fully comply with the indications of the Vilamoura – Vila Real de Santo António Coastal Waterfront Planning Plan (POOC), approved in 2005, whose review process was underway during last year.

For Luís Gomes, Mayor of Vila Real de Santo António, «the measure is clearly positive and marks the first step of what will be the rehabilitation of the seafront of Praia de Santo António. Monte Gordo, an area that intends to be modern, attractive and dynamic».

«The actions are only late, because we are not afraid of the word demolitions. On the contrary, this will be the opportunity to provide the beach with Monte Gordo with quality tourism and giving concessionaires the opportunity to invest in support with new conditions and with the dignity that the beach deserves”, continues the mayor.

The general plan already approved contemplates the removal of the old structures and the installation of 10 bathing areas, 10 new simple beach supports with associated equipment, as well as six other equipment.

This second phase of the operation should start at the end of this bathing season and the works will extend until the beginning of summer 2017. The number of units in the project allows the current concessionaires to have the possibility of reinvesting, maintaining their activity on that beach .

Municipality advances with the construction of a new seafront promenade

Demolitions_Beach of Monte Gordo_June 2016_2The requalification plan foresees the construction of a large transversal walkway along the beach, which will give access to the new bathing facilities, as well as the construction of ten points of entry into the sand from the parking lots and waterfront of Monte Gordo.

At an environmental level, the entire dune cord will be recovered, while the constructions to be implemented will be elevated, in order to avoid trampling, and will comply with sustainable materials and projects.

The proposal also integrates the maintenance of the corridor and areas affected by fishing activity, safeguarding this important sector of the bay of Monte Gordo.

The rehabilitation of the beach of Monte Gordo it joins the process of requalification of the seafront promoted by the municipality of VRSA, which is scheduled to start at the end of the summer.

This, which is the largest urban planning operation ever carried out in Monte Gordo, will give rise to the creation of a large maritime promenade that will be endowed with green spaces and leisure, commerce, shops and restaurants.

In plan, there is also the construction of a superior hotel complex on the beachfront, with spectacular views over the bay of Monte Gordo.

Added to this equipment is the implementation of a set of tourist units in the area of the former campsite of Monte Gordo, valued at 120 million euros, as well as the construction of a new tourist development in the eastern part of Monte Gordo, valued at 50 million euros.
