Five makers connected to the University of Algarve were distinguished with the “Maker of Merit” award at the third edition of the Maker Faire Lisbon, which took place on the 25th and 26th of June, at the Pavilhão do Conhecimento, in Lisbon. In addition to these, three other people from the Algarve were awarded at the event.

Luís Carlos, Master in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, took his humanoid robots inMoov and Rapiro and a full-scale model of the dancer Sonoya Mizuno, the main figure in the Chemical Brothers' “Wide Open” video, to the fair. The latter, which resulted from a collaboration with the production company The Mill, «was one of the most prominent projects in this edition of the event», according to the University of Algarve.

João Duarte and Gonçalo Pereira, Master's students in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and directors of the eLab Hackerspace of the University of Algarve, unveiled an oven for aluminum, copper and brass smelting, which allows the production of metal parts from part molds printed in 3D.

Mário Saleiro, one of the curators of the Maker Faire Lisbon since the first edition, a doctoral candidate in Computer Engineering and also director of the eLab Hackerspace at the University of Algarve, presented a HacKeyboard mechanical keyboard and his i3Saleiro 3D printer.

João Duarte and Mário Saleiro had already been distinguished in the two previous editions of the event.

In turn, the University of Algarve's eLab Hackerspace (http://www.elab-hackerspace.org) was awarded for his organization and participation in several projects at the Maker Faire Lisbon, having received a Blocks One 3D printer from the Portuguese company Blocks. In the two previous years, makers from the University of Algarve participated in this fair, having brought 8 awards to the Algarve.

According to the University of Algarve, «with this participation, marked by the great quality of projects, the existing potential in the Algarve in the areas of technologies was confirmed, once again, a great part of the teaching and research produced by UAlg».

From the Algarve, the award was also given to Rui Mesquita, from Portimo, for his LusoSat project, a small satellite aimed at education; Olaf Breuer, from the 3D Print Algarve company, for his 3D printing filament production machine; and the Centro Ciência Viva de Tavira for its neuro-robotic arm.
