Maria Cabrita and Francisca LaiaThe Portuguese duo composed of Maria Cabrita (Kayak Clube Castores do Arade) and Francisca Laia (Sporting Clube de Portugal) won this Friday the gold medal in the K2 500 meters event of the World University Championship, which is being disputed at the High Performance Center of Montemor-o-Velho.

Yesterday, the Portuguese canoeists had already secured the silver in the K2 200m event and made history today by becoming world university champions at a distance of 500m.

The time of 1:50,108 minutes earned them the gold medal with just 208 thousandths of a second ahead of the German team made up of Isabel Friedt and Sarah Bruessler, who recorded 1:50,316 minutes. The Polish team made up of Karolina Markiewicz and Anna Godek achieved the bronze medal with a time of 1:51,960 minutes.

Maria Cabrita is from the parish of Algoz, municipality of Silves and is a final year student of the degree in Sports Science at the Faculty of Sports Science and Physical Education of the University of Coimbra and Francisca Laia, from Sporting Clube de Portugal, is from Abrantes and also studies in Coimbra, at the Faculty of Medicine.

The 7th edition of the World University Championship has the presence of around 250 athletes, representing 20 countries and is organized by the Portuguese Canoeing Federation, in partnership with the International University Sports Federation (FISU), Academic Federation of University Sports (FADU), University of Coimbra (UC), Academic Association of Coimbra and also the Municipalities of Coimbra and Montemor-o-Velho.
