Team with Algarvian canoeist wins silver for Portugal in world competition

2016-K2w_F.Laia_M-Cabrita_FISUThe duo formed by the Algarve athlete Maria Cabrita, from Kayak Clube Castores do Arade, and by Francisca Laia, from Sporting, secured this Thursday the silver medal in the K2 200m event of the World University Canoeing Championship, which runs until tomorrow at the High Performance Center of Montemor-o-Velho.

The Portuguese team was only beaten by the Polish duo formed by Anna Pulawska and Dominika Wlodarczyk. In third, in this race, were the Italians Francesca Capodimonte and Francesca Genzo.

The 7th edition of the World University Championship has the presence of around 250 athletes, representing 20 countries and is organized by the Portuguese Canoeing Federation, in partnership with the International University Sports Federation (FISU), Academic Federation of University Sports (FADU), University of Coimbra (UC), Academic Association of Coimbra and also the Municipalities of Coimbra and Montemor-o-Velho.

Maria Cabrita is from the parish of Algoz, municipality of Silves and is a student in the final year of the degree in Sports Science at the Faculty of Sports Science and Physical Education of the University of Coimbra. Francisca Laia, from Sporting Clube de Portugal, is from Abrantes and also studies in Coimbra at the Faculty of Medicine.
