Tolentino MendoncaJosé Tolentino Mendonça is the winner of the 1st edition of the Grand Prix of Literature Portuguese Writers Association/Loulé City Council – Crónica e Dispersos Literários. The jury unanimously decided to distinguish this author's book “What things are the clouds”.

Casimiro de Brito, José Ribeiro Ferreira and José Cândido Oliveira Martins were the judges for this award.

«The multiple qualities of the work: the remarkable thematic and ideological scope; the opportunity and timelessness of a reflection on contemporary culture» were, according to the members of the jury, the main reasons that led to this distinction.

José Tolentino Mendonça is a poet, theologian, priest, professor and vice-rector of the Catholic University of Portugal. “Que things are the clouds” is a book that brings together the best chronicles published in the column he writes weekly in Jornal Expresso.

The author has several published works, especially in the areas of Poetry and Essay. He received several distinctions, including the Res Magnae 2015 Literary Prize, an important Italian prize awarded in the field of essays.

José Tolentino Mendonça was the first Portuguese and the only non-Italian, to date, to receive this award.

In this 1st edition of the Grand Prix of Literature – Chronicle and Literary Dispersed instituted by the Portuguese Association of Writers, with the sponsorship of the Loulé City Council, works published in 2014 and 2015 competed, exceptionally.

The monetary value of this Grand Prize is, for the distinguished author, 10 thousand euros.

The award ceremony will take place on May 5, Municipality Day, at 12:00 pm, at the Salão Nobre of the Paços do Concelho de Loulé.
