Mário de Carvalho was born in Lisbon in 1944, having graduated in Law. He was arrested by the political police during military training in 1971, where he was subjected to 11 days of sleep deprivation, ending up serving 14 months in prison in the political jails of Caxias and Peniche. «This situation is even dramatized in José Barahona's film, “Who is Ricardo?””, explains the Câmara de Olhão.

The author even left Portugal illegally in 1973 to go into exile in Sweden. And, when he returned to his homeland, he dedicated himself to the advocacy of causes, namely unions and tenancy, even becoming a member of the board of the Portuguese Writers Association, during the presidencies of David Mourão-Ferreira and Óscar Lopes.

For several years, he was a visiting professor at the Superior School of Theater and Cinema and the Superior School of Social Communication, managing to supervise postgraduate courses in theater writing at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon and several fiction writing workshops.

Father of writer Rita Taborda Duarte and journalist Ana Margarida de Carvalho, Mário de Carvalho is a novelist, novelist, short story writer, essayist, playwright and screenwriter.

"Contos da Sétima Esfera" is his first book that surprised "due to its disconcerting incursion into traditional Portuguese literature", says the municipality of Olhano. The works, "Vagabundos Tales", "Fantasy for Two Colonels and a Swimming Pool", "Casos do Beco das Sardinheiras" and "A Inaudita Guerra from Avenida Gago Coutinho" are also noteworthy.

The complete bibliography of the author existing in the Municipal Library of Olhão can be consulted through the online catalog.
