More than two tons of hashish were seized this Wednesday at dawn, in an operation coordinated by the Judiciary Police, after an unloading of drugs in Tavira.

The operation also resulted in the arrest of five alleged traffickers in different parts of the Algarve.

According to the PJ, which had the collaboration of other police forces, the group had already been investigated for about a year.

In addition to the 2100 kilos of drugs contained in 70 bales, today's operation made it possible to apprehend “two vessels, a high-end car, a goods vehicle, around fifteen hundred euros, three hundred dirames [Moroccan currency], a satellite telephone , a telecommunications radio, a GPS device and several mobile phones'.

The 2nd Section of DIAP – Faro He added, also in a statement, that the group was dedicated, "in an organized way, to the trafficking of large quantities of hashish between Morocco and the Algarve coast."

"Hash was transported on boats and unloaded in the Tavira area," added the entity responsible for the investigation that allowed this seizure.

The operation was carried out by the Southern Directorate of the PJ, in collaboration with the Maritime Police and the Coastal Control Unit of the GNR.

The presumed drug traffickers, aged between 28 and 58, and, in some cases, with a criminal record, will be brought before the judicial authorities to find out what coercive measures will be applied to them.
