railway_train_1 lineThe company Infraestruturas de Portugal announced today the completion of work to replace wooden sleepers with concrete at the Alcantarilha, Silves, Estômbar and Mexilhoeira Grande stations, and to raise the platforms at the Silves Station.

According to the company, these actions are part of its investment plan for the Algarve Line, «aimed at improving the efficiency and competitiveness of the rail system, strengthening safety conditions, increasing the availability and reliability of infrastructure and comfort for passengers'.

The intervention to replace wooden sleepers with concrete, developed as part of the process of improving the track superstructure of the Algarve Line stations, included the replacement, in all lines, of the old wooden sleepers by concrete sleepers, but also the replacement of short bar rail by long welded bar rail. The wooden floor was also replaced by a rubber floor in the existing crossings between platforms.

The implementation of the heightening of the platforms at the Silves Station had the objective of «improving the conditions of accessibility and use of this railway station, facilitating the process of embarking and disembarking passengers», explained IP.

On the Algarve Line, last year the contracts for raising the platforms of the Portimão, Cacela, Fuseta and Vila Real de Santo António stations had already been completed, and the roofing of the passenger buildings at the Albufeira and Tavira stations had been replaced.
