Monchique_07JS Algarve will organize a conference with the theme “Young people and the Interior: Challenges for settling young people in the Algarve countryside”, next Saturday, 21 February, at the headquarters of the Socialist Party in Monchique.

Speakers at the initiative will be António Covas, full professor at the University of Algarve and coordinator of the Querença Project, and Anabela Santos, coordinator of the Via Algarviana project. The conference will be moderated by the president of JS Algarve, José Cardoso.

The young socialists in the Algarve intend to «bring to the political agenda the problem of the desertification of the Algarve interior, the issue of the disappearance of the economic fabric, employment and public services and its relationship with the difficulty in settling young people in the Algarve's municipalities affected by interiority».

The JS Regional Political Commission will meet on the same day in Monchique, a municipality in the interior of the Algarve that has lost about half of its population in the last decade.

This working day is intended to "put into perspective challenges, opportunities and proposals to reverse the trend of abandonment of the interior, in particular by the youngest".

JS Algarve considers this topic to be of the utmost importance, arguing that, «despite the strong potential for attracting population in the region, the municipalities in the interior strongly contradict this trend, and today they find themselves with high rates of population aging. The territorial and social cohesion of the region requires a serious and urgent debate in this regard».
