With a global handling of 1.227.694 TEU in containers and 37,6 million tons of goods handled in 2014, the Port of Sines registered its best year ever.
In containers, the growth was 32%, compared to the same period of the previous year, reinforcing its position in the world's top major ports with this cargo segment.
In goods, the Port of Sines grew another 3% (+1.069.000 tons).
"For this sustained growth, long-haul services stood out, mainly with the US and Middle East markets, also strengthening the commercial relationship with the South American markets", stresses the Administration of the Port of Sines in a note press release.
Traffic to the hinterland it also grew proportionally, with special emphasis on the rail mode, with an increase of 36% with regard to the handling of containers, while the number of trains, also for the transport of containerized cargo, increased by 40% compared to 2013.
A TEU, which is a 20 Feet Equivalent Unit (in English: Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit or TEU), is a standard measure used to calculate the volume of a container.
