corruption"Corruption" is the winning word among the ten that were voted on the site Infopedia.pt, as word of the year 2014.

“Corruption” received 25% of the votes of the 22 thousand Portuguese who participated in this choice, which went online during the month of December, on the website linked to the Porto Editora Group.

Secondly, there was “xurdir”, a regionalism that means “fighting for life” or “doing for life”, and thirdly “selfie”, a foreignness adopted by the Portuguese language and meaning “self-portrait”, the act of taking a photograph himself, both with 22%, but with differences in the absolute number of votes.

"The various cases of suspected corruption that have been known over the past year, and the consequent attention given by the 'media' that fueled debates and conversations, will have influenced the choice made by the Portuguese", justifies the editor.

On the Facebook page created to promote the vote on the word “xurdir”, its promoters express their satisfaction for the “honorable second place”, adding “we have no reason to be sad. The word “obvious” won, but the big winner was “our” word”, which “surprised” and “excited”.

A great distance were the remaining seven words that were voted on: “basqueiro” (8%), “ébola” (6%), “cybervadagem” (5%), “jihadism” (4%), “bank”, “ gamification” and “legionella” (3%).

The announcement of the chosen floor and the remaining results took place a moment ago, at the José Saramago Municipal Library, in Loures.
