What are resistant bacteria? When were rabbits domesticated? Are there frogs that freeze? What was Einstein's brain like? Are the tears always the same?

These and many other questions are answered in the new book “Íris Científica 2”, by António Piedade, which will be released tomorrow, December 16, at 18 pm, at the Rómulo Centro Ciência Viva of the University of Coimbra.

This work of scientific dissemination will be presented by Professor Dr. Carlos Fiolhais.

“Iris Científica 2” is a book that brings together thirty texts that travel through different disciplines of science: biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, geology, astronomy and history of science.

The texts are impregnated with an interdisciplinary approach, which in general defends the thesis that scientific culture is only one.

Carlos Fiolhais wrote about the author: «António Piedade is a talented science communicator. With a background in biochemistry and several original articles published in this area of scientific knowledge, he knows how the “path is made to walk”. In recent years, it has revealed itself to be an original voice in the communication of science in the Portuguese language, a voice that manages with apparent ease to cross the barrier between the first explorers and those interested in learning new about exploration. (…) There is a very peculiar element in António Piedade's writing that greatly contributes to the pleasure of reading: it is the literary, sometimes even poetic, imprint that he knows how to imprint on his writing».

António Piedade is a Biochemist and Science Communicator. He is a scientific consultant for the “Science in the Regional Press” project of the National Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture – Ciência Viva.

After an initial path of laboratory scientific investigation, which resulted in the publication of 16 scientific articles, he has developed an intense and diversified activity as a science communicator.

antonio pityIn particular, in the last three years, it has been dedicated exclusively to the dissemination of science, through more than 400 articles and chronicles in the media, guidance of workshops, as well as several lectures in schools and Ciência Viva Centers.
