The Horta do Carmo Basic School, in Tavira, is one of the winners, at national level, of the «Fruit Heroes – Healthy School Snack» initiative, with the prize awarded to students on Monday, April 28, at 14 pm , on that school.

This is the second of the five winning schools of the 3rd edition of the project that will receive on their school grounds the visit of APCOI - Portuguese Association Against Childhood Obesity, to celebrate the enormous success achieved by the participation of students in this health education initiative in national scope.

The celebrations will start with the presentation of the winning “Fruit Anthem”, a song dedicated to the importance of fruit for healthy eating, whose lyrics were created by the school, and which will be sung by the students themselves.

This will be followed by the official delivery of the participation diplomas to children, which will include the participation of Mário Silva, president and founder of APCOI, representatives of the municipalities and some ambassadors of the project.

In this event, the “Super Festa dos Heroes da Fruta” will also be held, an interactive theater play, in which children's animators and mascots remind children of the main commandments of the “Fruit Heroes” through educational games and activities that promote physical activity. At the end, students receive a piece of fruit, among other healthy offerings.

The 3rd edition of the “Fruit Heroes – Healthy School Snack” project had more than 70 thousand children enrolled from all regions of the country.

This initiative that APCOI – Portuguese Association Against Childhood Obesity has been carrying out free of charge in schools since 2011 aims to motivate children to adopt the healthy habit of eating fruit daily in the doses recommended by the World Health Organization, contrary to the national statistics of this consumption, which is of only 2% (Source: COSI Study 2008), and also as a way to contribute to the prevention of certain diseases, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension and various types of cancer.
