“Litoral, a sea of ​​discoveries” is the theme of the 10th Regional Environmental Education Meeting of the Algarve (EREAA), which will take place at Espaço +, in Aljezur, on the 2nd and 3rd of May.

Coastal erosion, marine pollution and invasive species are the issues to be addressed during these two days of work, by experts invited by Almargem (Association for the Defense of the Cultural and Environmental Heritage of the Algarve), which organizes the event, with the support of the City Council of Aljezur.

Assuming that it is necessary to Know to Preserve, the 10th EREAA invited a group of specialists in Environmental Education and in different scientific matters, who will elucidate the participants about the problems that coastal areas face, as well as make known the work they have. developed in terms of awareness and behavior change.

«Environmental Education is in constant change and it is no longer enough to say that it is like this, it is necessary to go further. It is necessary to show and demonstrate. And so, just like the coast, this meeting is also intended to be a wide, diversified, very dynamic and open learning space», stresses Almargem.

Thus, the Meeting opens on the 2nd, at 10:00 am, with the conference «Coastal Erosion and Protection of the Cliffs», in charge of the geologist Sebastião Teixeira, responsible for the Portuguese Environment Agency/ARH Algarve.

This is followed by a panel on Marine Pollution, moderated by Paula Vaz (APA/ARH Algarve), during which Professor José Artur Fernandes and his group from the Aljezur Schools Group will present their work «MareMotrix – navigating energies and pollution of the seas'.

Soon after, Flávia Silva, from the Faculty of Sciences and Technologies of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, will speak about the project «MARLISCO – Marine litter is a global problem!».

In the afternoon, the second panel has as its generic “The sea as inspiration for Environmental Education”, and begins at 14 pm, with a presentation by Paulo Oliveira on the “Museum of the Sea and Land of Carrapateira – Sustainable Heritage”.

Then, Verão Jordão and Lese Costa, from Escola do Mar, will talk about “Cetaceans as a vehicle of education and conservation for the marine environment”. Sílvia Carreira will then make a presentation on the Madeira Whale Museum, entitled, «From the educational potential of cetaceans to environmental practice».

Closing this first day, and after an optional dinner with Aljezur's sweet potato as the theme, the documentary «Plastic Shores» will be presented at 21 pm, which makes a dramatic portrait of the pollution of the seas caused by plastics and other debris of the modern world.

The morning of the second day, May 3, will be occupied by environmental itineraries: the Historical-Cultural and Environmental Circuit of Aljezur, guided by José Marreiros, from the Association for the Defense of the Historical and Archaeological Heritage of Aljezur, or the interpretation route of the Hotspot Várzeas de Aljezur, guided by Ana Filipa Costa, from the Almargem association.

After lunch, from 14 pm onwards, a lecture-debate will take place, moderated by Filipa Fonseca, from the Aljezur Chamber, where the threat to biodiversity caused by weeping will be discussed, in a lecture presented by Maria José Gomes (ICNF ).

At 1645, the workshop «The Coast within Us», during which Inês Mestrinho, with a degree in Marine Biology from the University of Algarve and in dance therapy from the Sarabanda School of Dance, in Milan, will present the Danças de Água.

For 18:00, the balance and closing of this 10th Regional Environmental Education Meeting of the Algarve (EREAA) is scheduled.
