The Working Group that is analyzing the possible reopening of the Health Extensions of Odeleite, Azinhal and Vaqueiros has already met «three times since the end of last year, with the fourth meeting scheduled for next week», said the Regional Administration of Algarve Health to Sul Informação.

"Given the timely identified constraints that led to the closure of the three extensions, the process is proceeding as quickly as possible, and it is not possible at the present date to put forward a concrete date for the reopening of the extensions", adds the ARS.

It was in this succinct way that the ARS responded, at the request of the Sul Informação, to press release this week issued by PSD/Algarve, who considered it necessary for the Government to create «the necessary conditions» so that the ARS Algarve can reopen «as quickly as possible» those Health Extensions, located in the municipalities of Castro Marim and Alcoutim, closed in October last year.

Despite acknowledging that “a negotiation process is underway between the ARS Algarve and the municipalities of Castro Marim and Alcoutim”, the PSD/Algarve insisted on the “speed” of the reopening, “because the aforementioned health units constitute an indispensable response to populations of these parishes, whose residents are mostly elderly with low resources and without public transport available regularly to the headquarters of the respective municipalities, significantly conditioning access to health care».

The Algarve social democrats, whose president is Luís Gomes, mayor of Vila Real de Santo António, add that, after "diligences to understand the reasons for this closure", they were "concerned about this decision", after hearing the "government statements on this matter».

Last week, the Ministry of Health, responding to a request from the Parliamentary Group of the Left Bloc, considered that the closure of three health extensions in Castro Marim and Alcoutim had improved access to health care for the populations they served. to have access to consultation “every working day” and better “accessibility”.

Recently, AMAL – Algarve Intermunicipal Community deliberated unanimously, «require the reopening of the health extensions that have already been closed» in Castro Marim and Alcoutim and ensure that no one else closes.

The closure of these Extensions has already motivated strong protests from the populations from both counties, with a demonstration even taking place at the door of the ARS in Faro, which brought together mainly the elderly and mayors.
