The president of the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA) welcomes the classification of the Mediterranean diet as Intangible Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which met today in Baku, Azerbaijan, the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Heritage.

Desidério Silva declares himself "delighted" by "UNESCO's recognition of the Algarve's culture, its typically Mediterranean cuisine and wines, which are very important for tourism in the Algarve", says the president.

«The news is the icing on the cake», concludes Desidério Silva, in an allusion to other distinctions that the country's biggest holiday destination recently received: the award for «Best Beach Destination in Europe» at the World Travel Awards, the oscar tourism, and the election of the region as «European Golf Destination of the Year 2014», the main award of the golf tourism industry, awarded by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO).

The candidacy now approved has Tavira as its representative community and was led by the president of that Algarve municipality, Jorge Botelho, to whom the RTA executive has already sent a congratulatory message for the international recognition of the Mediterranean diet.
