The Museum of Olhão proposes five exhibitions for those who visit the city, since “summer holidays are not necessarily dedicated exclusively to the beach”.

In addition to the permanent exhibitions dedicated to the council's Roman heritage and maritime commitment, this cultural space also offers temporary exhibitions on fishing professionals, salt and the newspaper «O Olhanense».

Thus, whoever wants to take a dip in culture, between bathing in the sea, can see the exhibitions «The Roman Presence in the Municipality of Olhão», «Marítimos Commitments», «Os Pescadores», «O Olhanense» and «O Sal de Olhão”, from Tuesday to Friday from 10 am to 12:30 pm and from 14 pm to 17:30 pm and on Saturdays from 10 am to 13 pm. The Museum of Olhão is located in Largo da Restauração, opposite the Igreja Matriz.

«In the different rooms of the Municipal Museum of Olhão, we can learn about the 'stories' behind the history of these themes, in a building, the Compromisso Marítimo, which is another reason to visit, due to its great historical value. Compromisso Marítimo de Olhão, created to support the city's fishermen, had, on the ground floor, a pharmacy (pharmacy) and a butcher shop for the service of seafarers. On the main floor was the Sala dos Despachos, which features a painting on the wooden ceiling of the roof where the coat of arms of Portuguese royal arms stands out», described the Chamber of Olhão, in a press release.

About the shows:

The «Roman Presence in the Municipality of Olhão» shows a significant part of the heritage of this people in this municipality, using some pieces from a vast and unique collection from a scientific point of view, from the Parish Museum of Moncarapacho. It is, therefore, a unique opportunity to discover or even rediscover pieces that are part of one of the most important chapters in the history of the Municipality.

The photographic exhibition “Os Pescadores” illustrates two narratives from Olhão: one, published in 1922 by Raul Brandão and the other currently photographed by Luísa Soares Teixeira. It seeks to demonstrate that the environment has changed but that men remain “simple because the profession is simple and the environment, great and eternal, does not corrupt them”.

The exhibition about the local newspaper «O Olhanense», published for the first time on May 15th, 1963, with the original name “Sporting Olhanense”, changing to the current name around the 80s, shows some of the steps taken by the publication over 50 years. The newspaper has maintained, until today, its regular publication, being one of the local newspapers for the longest time in uninterrupted operation in the region.

The «Sal de Olhão», a characteristic product of this municipality with great socio-economic relevance, is an exhibition which aims to highlight the importance of salt production in the territory of Olhão. It is precisely important to disclose the cultural heritage associated with the marines, the oldest Portuguese term to designate 'salina', which is of great wealth as a historical, cultural and natural testimony of the region.

The exhibition «Marítimos Commitments» proposes a look at the different dimensions in which Marítimos Commitments operated, associations of seafarers, also known as Irmandades or Confrarias do Corpo Santo, and which had a strong impact on the communities where they were created.
