Physical activity habits, eating patterns and sedentary lifestyle were some of the various concepts covered in the study on childhood obesity carried out by the partnership of the TAG project. The study culminated in a book to be presented this Friday at the Vicente Campinas Library, in Vila Real de Santo António.

On July 5th, at 17 pm, Associação Odiana, together with the TAG project partnership, will present a study carried out in the territory of Baixo Guadiana on one of the biggest current scourges, obesity.

The title is long, but complete: «Physical Activity, Obesity, Diet and Body Image in the Population 6 to 10 Years Old in the Low Guadiana Territory».

The presentation will be made at the Library of Vila Real de Santo António and portrays a study that reflects the need for a concerted strategy for prevention, as well as rooting healthy habits in the lives of young people in the area.

The study aimed to describe and relate physical activity habits, eating patterns, sedentary lifestyle, body mass index and body image satisfaction in the municipalities surrounding the Guadiana in Portugal and Spain, comparing both populations.

With a sample corresponding to 2261 elementary school students, between 6 and 10 years old, among the most relevant results it was concluded that the level of physical activity is below the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO).

The study also contains a list of recommendations to counteract this phenomenon.

This study/publication had the full support of Associação Odiana and the Escola Ativa Project (Office of School Sport), from the Algarve and Alentejo Services Departments.

Among the authors of the study are Professor Carlos Afonso, Head of the Sports and Health Division of the Municipality of VRSA, Professor Hélder Silva of the Castro Marim Schools Group and Coordinator of the Escola Ativa Project (Sotavento); and Eduardo Ozcorta, Pedro Buñuel, Ángela Robles and Immaculada Quiñones from the Department of Physical Education at the University of Huelva.

This initiative is organized by the partnership and project TAG – Turismo Ativo no Guadiana, a cooperation initiative between the Algarve, Alentejo and Andalusia, financed by the Portugal-Spain Cross-border Cooperation Program, 2007-2013.
